The rear shock on the YSR I just got is nowhere near up to the task of dealing with my bulk. Does anyone local have a shock that would work on this bike that will deal with 250-odd pound rider weights? If not, I'll be calling up the Squids at Team Calamari.

check out YSR50.com Classifieds or ebay.

I recommend to replace the rubber shock bushing with the nylon replacement, which you can purchase from TCR. Additionally, for added stiffness / support, install skateboard truck bushings (large) between the springs, opposite from each other. It worked pretty well for my YSR when I ran a stock shock. It also tracked quite nicely too, if I may add :)

When one becomes available, get a FOX or Works shock. Otherwise, with some fabrication (requires cutting and welding), other reputable shocks can be used.

"when one becomes available"? On the TCR site, they list a Works shock for the YSR as being available. Is that out of date?

Otherwise, good info!

I really dug into this little guy today, and there's a number of little things that I'm going to correct/update on it.

Sorry, I won't go on ysr50.com. They make you register to even view the forum, and the registration process requires parroting back multiple advertising slogans into a Captcha box. I don't need to see any forum that badly.

I was referring mostly to the FOX shock, but if the Works shock is still available, go for it.

As to your last comment, sounds like a Mini Tech Day is in order :p ........ :laughing

From YSR forums (classified)

I have an ohlins shock for a ysr 50 for sale. I want $500 obo. the shock works fantastic and has very little use out of it. Please reply or email me at swalker0814@yahoo.com or preferably call me at 571-233-5030 and leave a message if you dont get through.

Good stuff! I'm actually going directly to Works and having them custom make a shock for my weight. It's the same price range as the Fox/Ohlins units, and it should be correct for my rather unusual application.

Update: the Works shock arrived yesterday and went straight on the bike. Nice unit, and it supports my weight just fine.

now I just need to respring the forks!

Does your YSR have the second fork spring? The TCR spring kit is pretty simple to install and affordable. Also, you may want to go w/ a little heavier wt oil, 20 or 30. Or you can send your forks to TCR and have them revalve, install the springs, and inspect (or replace) your fork seals, if you're not comfortable doing it yourself.

I'm not sure if it's got the 2nd fork spring, but I'd be surprised if it does. I'll have to pull it apart after next week's mini ride and see. :thumbup
