Titled:
Whelp, finally happened.

The rider appears to have proven that the other driver was at fault because of his helmet cam. Well I want one and have been researching the dashcams for motorcycles and have not been able to find one that fits all my needs and mounts easily on the helmet.

Needs and wants of dashcam:
Needs to be able to record over itself but also be able to keep 1 to 2 minutes of video if a crash is detected.
Will mount to my helmet and but not like the GoPro that is on top of your helmet. Want a slim package preferably mounted on the side with big buttons to work the camera.
A rotating lens so that regardless of where I mount it the lens can be turned so that the video captured is straight.
At least a 3 hour battery life and be able to be wired into the bikes electrical system.
GPS would be nice but not necessary.

Does anyone have suggestions for such a camera and the best way to mount it?
RC

I suggest the innov k1, developed with help from this forum and a sponsoring vendor IIRC

EDIT: I missed you saying you want to mount to your helmet, the K1 has two cameras intended for mounting to your bike

The contour cam has all those needs. Albeit no looping or G-lock. Since you need to recharge it with a cord, and reformatting is easy, looping is nice but not really missed. Usually you see the looping feature on dash cams on vehicles since they are plugged in charging at all times. Most vehicle dash cams have the g-force lock. However helmet cams don't necessarily have the same features as a dash cam just because of the environment they are in. Ive had my contour for some time and has worked very well. Love the small size vs chunky gopro.

Yep. +1 on Contour. You can format with push of the button and takes seconds.

Inconspicuous cameras on the bike might be best if you speed. Wouldn't want the video easily seen and seized by a LEO and used against ya. Or have the cameras stolen.

Contour works for me. No looping, do it yourself when you stop for gas. No bike-wired power, use the battery only, as far as I know. It would suck to have wires going to your helmet. It has more than enough battery and card capacity to record long commutes (both ways) and hours-long sport rides, but not enough for touring rides. When I have used it on longer rides I just turn it on when things are interesting and off when things are boring.

Just the other day on my commute I captured a car disintegrating in front of me and car pieces flying at me.

When has an LEO seized a camera?

Neva been done befo!

I have a Drift, no looping but an external power pack with a big enough micro card and it will record the whole day without touching it again. It has a pocket 'button' remote to turn the record on/off without shutting down the cam itself so you don't have to to take your helmet on/off every time.

It's on my helmet, not my bike, with the pack in my pocket. It sees what I see because it aims where I look. Got the driver that hit me from the side as the sole cause of the incident so cops, court and insurance were ho problems for me.

Pix showing the mount to helmet here http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=428436&page=2 in post #17. It shows a Contour (it went bad) but the Drift is mounted the same way.

The Drift survived a left turner T boning, a 15 ft spinning flight, a collision with a cement tree planter and hitting the sidewalk, camera side down. It kept recording the whole time and I'm still using it three years later.

I just use my gopro. Helmet mounted. I can move it from helmet to helmet or bike to bike. Allows me to record where im looking when moving on two wheels. Only bummer is i gotta charge it by the end of the day.

Theres also loop feature but i dont use it cause my memory stick is big enough. I set it up for quick capture so its one button to turn on and record and one button to stop record and turn off

Plus one on the drift

I have a few drifts .The stealth can be had on amazon for below 100.00
I also have two Drift Ghost S' those have a LCD dvr .
love these cams.
Can be mounted easily on the lid or bike.
Also make great in car dash cams/ in car (track) cam.

... Love the small size vs chunky gopro.

The Contour lens is actually quite good for their size on the Roams. Excellent water resistance. I have "huge" cards in mine. But, I have run out of battery sooner than I would like. I need a battery swappable model, I think.

Another Contour user here. I run two cameras - one helmet mounted and the other bike mounted facing rearward. Seeing some of the posts on here I'm starting to think two cameras is not enough.

The Contours have more than enough storage and battery for my daily commute, and I format and charge them every night. An integrated dashcam setup would be nice so I won't have to worry about forgetting to turn them on but my setup is cheap and simple.

Here's two after a quick search.

Police said that at the time of the initial arrest, a GoPro video camera was seized and a search warrant granted for video contained on the camera.
..
After viewing the video, police said Grant and Clark were arrested and charged with reckless conduct based on the video showing them passing vehicles at speeds up to 160 mph. - See more at: http://www.unionleader.com/Motorcyc...ph-after-review-of-GoPro#sthash.143cRnmz.dpuf

My question involves traffic court in the State of: CA
I have a very unique situation of getting speed ticket by my own video cam.

I crashed my motorcycle while riding mountain twisty with my friend in CA. GoPro video cam on my bike recorded the crash scene including the speedometer of the bike. No other vehicle was involved. I had broken leg and while I was waiting for ambulance, CHP officer arrived at the scene. When my friend was trying to retrieve my GoPro Cam off my bike, the officer told him to leave it on and the bike was towed away. A couple of days later, the CHP officer showed up in the hospital where I was in, and issued a speed ticket for 71 mph where speed limit was 55 mph. He said he reviewed video file from my cam and registered the file as evidence. He returned me the empty memory card after he deleted the video (Cam was still on bike at towing service co). He said I was going up to 80 mph in other part of the road, so if I appeal, judge will see the video evidence and can suspend my license for reckless driving.

Isn't that tampering with evidence and destruction of personal property?

If the origional recording no longer exists can anyone prove the video hasn't been altered in any way?

Does your chosen view include your speedometer?
If yes, why would you do that?

I've got a Drift in addition to the Contour. The Drift can be set to low light mode, which is its only real advantage. You can change camera settings directly on the Drift whereas the Contour requires a computer connection. The major disadvantage of the Drift is you will never be able to touch record/stop while it it mounted on the helmet and if you could you can't tell if it's recording or stopped or off. The Contour is super simple, slide forward with a gloved finger to record, slide back to stop.

I use a Sena 10c. It has video tagging feature which only saves 3 minutes surrounding the event when the button is pushed.

Going to review the Contour and hope it comes with good mounting hardware for helmet.

The Drift has a remote with large buttons, easy to use with gloves on, and you can see which button you're touching. Two different sounding beeps tell you when recording starts or stops. I've never found any dis-advantage with it.

While my Contour may have been "super simple" it had no 'signal' from the cam to tell me it had stopped working. Something it did randomly and often, for no reason that I or the company could discover.

The Drift and the Contour both make sounds when starting/stopping recording, neither of which can be heard from a moving motorcycle while wearing ear protection and a helmet.

Disclaimer: I have slight hearing loss.
