Hi! I am 29yrs old and weigh 150lbs living in San Francisco. I am thinking of getting a motorcycle to commute to San Rafael so as to save on gas as well as toll. I am not new to motorcycle riding as I used to ride since age 16 until 5yrs ago. But it was in another country with a 2stroke 250cc Road King.
I was suggested that a DRZ400SM was a good bike to start with.
Are there any others that would be a good starter vehicle that would suit my purpose?
I am not looking for power, but something comfortable to ride and one that would not need a full throttle on the freeway.
All comments and suggestions would be really appreciated!

I have an 06 Ninja 500r for sale with 4,600 miles on it....

drzs are epic but i would recommend a ninja 250

he said he did'nt want to go full throtle on he freeway, don't you think the 500 would be a little better for the same size bike?

Yeah, a Ninja 500 sounds about right. Easy to ride, more oomph than a DRZ or 250.

I know most recommendations are the Ninja 250.
My only concern is that would a 250 have enough juice to ride on the freeway?
I mean would passing become an issue when cars are going at an average 70mph?

ninja 250's are for girls. Get a ninja 500 or the drz. The drz is the most fun out of that bunch

Do you even want a sport bike? Do you want to buy new? There are plenty of comfortable bikes out there, Honda Nighthawk or Rebel come to mind.

Look for what is for sale for $3000, buy what looks best to you. You can get a newer 250 nijet, or the Ninja 500 for that price, maybe an older SV650, CBR600 F2-F3, Ninja 600, FZR 600. The DRZ400 SM will be out of your price range.

Oh my, that looks bad! A coworker occasionally rides his DRZ to work, but says it sux for the freeway--he usually commutes on a wee-strom. Since OP doesn't want a bike that needs full throttle to cruise on the freeway he probably wouldn't be happy with either DRZ or ninja 250 which I think some had suggested.

Lots of used bikes in the $3k and below range that should work tho...

I started on a Ninja 500. No complaints with it and it'll be fine for commuting on the freeway. But, FZR600s are nice and comfy too and have a bit more go.
