New Update: Any recommendation for Prepurchase Inspection BMW 1250GS?

Hi Gurus,

I am planning to buy a used 2019 R1250GS with 29K miles and two owners. I recently inspected the bike and took it for a test ride. Here are my observations:
  • No service history records
  • Tires are in poor condition
  • TPMS not working (front and rear)
  • Registration tag expired
  • Noticed slight leakage from both front suspensions
I am new to this bike, but during the ride (especially in 2nd and 3rd gear), I felt some vibration from the engine area. I also noticed slight vibration while revving and at idle. I am not sure if this is typical behavior of the boxer engine.

I would really appreciate recommendations from the group on whether these are normal characteristics or potential red flags. Also, if anyone can suggest a trusted BMW mechanic or expert who could inspect the bike with me, that would be very helpful. I want to avoid unexpected repair costs after purchase.

Thanks in advance for your help

Spend the money to get a real (knowledgeable and BMW experienced) Tech to do an inspection- figure $200 at least, see if the seller will pay half. Most of your items seem cosmetic (including tires as they are "consumable) and its the "under the hood" stuff that'll cost you. Having no records gives you a lot of leverage to low-ball the two dumbasses that owned it prior to you.

Reg can bite you- was a non-op submitted? In any case, contact DMV and see what fees are due to get it brought up to date- don't pay any of that shit- the owner needs to get it caught up. Does it have a clear title? DMV will know.

29k is a fair amount for a '19 vintage, discover what maintenance is due at 30k and what that will cost- with no records, assume nothing has been done so far and discount accordingly. This sounds like a bike a mechanic could buy and come out ahead. If you aren't into fixing most of the things it will need, I'd pass unless you have a lot of patience and money.

Thank you! I love it, going to negotiate hard, once I get the mechanics input.

With no service records you have no idea how old the engine oil is, brake fluid, coolant, air filter, remaining brake pad life, etc. Shame on the seller for trying to offload in this condition.
If going to BMW San Jose get a complete service (oil change, etc) which should include a complete inspection of the bike. The seller should pay entirely for this but you'll probably lose the deal if you press for that.
At least get them to split the cost 50/50.
Then, with the inspection in hand, you can make a deal knowing the facts.

The DMV is another issue which has been addressed well by NorCalBusa. I'd follow his thinking.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

I'm on my third GSA, a '24 now, and they are tanks but lacking so much I would also get input from a pro. Side note, if that does not work out my brother-in-law will be selling one of his many GS's shortly and they are all immaculate. Let me know if you're interested.

San Jose BMW will be able to punch up the bike VIN and tell you what the "BMW network" has done to the bike and possibly estimates that were given and the work not done (<- not sure of that, can a BMW tech chime in?). Its fair to assume, as they have no records, that nothing else has been done- no matter how loudly the seller whines about oh I did this and that. Prove it.

If you buy it, at a min it will need full service so you have a reasonable starting point. At nearly 30k, that won't be cheap- get a quote from SJBMW for that and discount the price by the total of that service and another quote for any "broken stuff" that needs fixing...as a starting point.

Keep us posted- buying a bike is fun because it ain't a deal until YOU say it is. There are plenty of bikes for sale, don't fall in love just yet.

Why even bother with this bike? There's a ton of used 1250 GSs for sale--this bike sounds like a potential basket case. I'd move on and not waste time paying someone to look over the bike.

Thank you! Yeah I will be interested, since its my first GS - this is what I had in mind Model: 2018+, price somewhere around $10K

Thank you for all the inputs, I am loving this community even more now... so many valuable suggestions.

If you like it, buy it and fix it, a weekend of work and tires. Price should be cheap enough to entice you, especially with expired registration. If you have to bring it to Bmw to do the service work, the money you save will be eaten by any service costs.

Bike looks nice, if the oil looked like oil I wouldn't worry about it. Do the bikes have known problems?

Re: leaking front suspension

Don't all BMW GS use the telelever front end?
Is there even any oil in those forks? I wouldn't think so, I would think the shock does all the work.

That gen forks always are a little wet on the seal. The shock does all the work but the forks still have oil in them just to lubricate the tubes as they move.

For an '18+ I feel 10K may be a struggle unless it has higher miles and not many farkles. Let me know how it works out with the one you're checking out and we can go from there.

Thanks, also as a GS rider do you prefer the analog display or the digital display, that something different in 2017-2018 models

keep in mine if you are coming off the 890 R the GS is a BIG bike to swing through the corners...

890 - hot knife through butter

GS - Butter toast on a couch...

But yea take it to SJ BMW and go from there.
