BMWs are only on the side stand whilst mounting or dismounting. :x

That's because BMW's are the German Harleys. Both resemble outdated farm equipment, have the same outdated technology, and are loved fanatically by a core group of customers. Both companies know where their market is and they cater to it. Interestingly, the bricks were replaced by something more conventional.
 
K series

The K series BMW's have water-cooled engines of three (K75), or four (K100, K1100, K1200, K1300), or six (K1600) cylinders. Until 2005, although currently in use on the K1200LT, the engine was longitudinally mounted, laid out on its left side with the cylinder heads on the left and the crankshaft on the right. It is called the "Flying Brick" because of the appearance of this layout.

Uhhhh, I'd beg ta differ, 2005 to 2009 are hexheads, '10 on are Cam heads. (If'n ya wanta impress wit yer street credz?) You fellerz are ride the first cam over boxer motors, bettah recognize!

The original K engine, or longitudinal inline 4 cylinder.

Current K models have a transverse mounted engine and have nothing in common with the Flying Brick.
