Non-lethal force--when justified?

Unless there is someone threatening someone else with great bodily injury or death, I keep my badge and gun hidden. When I'm off duty, I'm aware of what everyone is doing around me, but I also avoid any confrontation (words, gestures, and staredowns). This is especially true when I'm with my family. If I'm in a driving situation where the other driver is pissed, I give them the "I'm sorry wave" and go on my way. If my badge and gun have to come out, it's a pretty serious situation....
