So I've never played with or tried overclocking a pc and was wondering if some one could give me some advice on overclocking. I would to run the pc between 4-4.5ghz. I figured that shouldn't be to hard of an overclock range for me to hit.
I ran 3d mark vantage while having cpuid up so you can see an idea of what the idle temps are and the temps under a load. also had up cpu-z to see info on the chip.
As far as the system goes its an AMD FX-8120
Motherboard is MSI 990FXA-GD65
I have a corsair H60 cpu water cooler.
Idle core temps are 18-20C temps under load are as high as 41C while running benchmarks.

Not worth it if you're gonna stick with semi-passive air cooling.

I've never done it myself, as I've been more of a budget gamer pc guy most of my life (3rd most expensive items == :thumbup ), but if I was gonna make it worth my while to overclock I'd start with a liquid cooled setup.

Yeah yeah, more shit to go wrong and roast all that equipment, but fuck, why you overclocking in the first place? :laughing

Thats why I don't want to just randomly play with things and fry my new system.

It won't fry, it'll just go into an thermal overload condition, save the bois settings if you can. Then after you reset it(the main board) to clear the thermal error you can go back and reload the bios.

If you've never ever O/C'd before, you have a lot to learn. Like more than we could explain in this thread. You need to familiarize yourself with FSB speeds, voltage, CPU multipliers, etc. etc. etc. We don't even know what kind of ram you're running. Once you have a basic understanding of all that, then you can figure out some baseline goals and start playing with settings. http://hardforum.com/index.php is where I learned, but there are probably better newbie specific faq/guides out there that you should read before you start a thread. Just google "Overclocking FAQ guide" and start reading. Good luck!

Best to read up on overclocking as there are a lot of variables. But if I am reading your pic correctly, your processor is unlocked. Unlocked AMD chips are one of the easiest to OC by simply increasing the multiplier. Might not be able to get you up to 4 ghz, but you may get close depending on several variables.

Overclocking will buy you a few cycles.

It won't buy you any cache, or much in the way of RAM speed, or any I/O, or really much of anything else.

15 years ago, yeah, I bothered.

Now? Not so much. Good cooling is a great goal, helps with system longevity. Overclocking? May not be worth it. I don't even bother now.

Same here.

Ran mine overclocked for a couple weeks, it was a giggle to see big numbers on the benchmarks, and then I realized I can still browse barf while lightroom is process a batch edit of my latest wedding, so why bother? :laughing

+1
overclocking a Celeron 300MHz to 450 to play Quake. oh yes:laughing
