The details are still filtering in from Japan, but this much sadly seems true: former Yamaha GP and WSBK rider Norik 'Nori' Abe was killed today in some sort of street accident Japan.

More details as they are beamed in.

Norick was an interesting guy. IIRC his father was a good racer in Japan, and wanted his boy to be successful at racing too. So when Norick was growing up, his dad brought him to America to do some dirt-track racing so Norick could learn how to slide a motorcycle.

He went back to Japan and raced his way up the ranks, and one day got a shot at the big-time when he was a wildcard entry at the Suzuka GP. He blew everybody's mind by being very competetive which just didn't happen with wildcard riders in that era, though he eventually crashed out of the race. That gave him a springboard to become a factory rider, and he got his revenge by winning the Suzuka GP later.

RIP Norick.

A couple of racers over the years have died on the streets. Which goes to show you the streets are dangerous for the pros, let alone us, average dudes and dudettes!

A japanese super star... I am sure he will be missed.

Just goes to show you can't take anything for granted on the streets, even if you have superhuman riding skills.

"It's all the other dumbasses driving out there that will kill you," we always say. Really it's the addiction to being on 2 wheels that kills us. But I think deep down inside we all know that already and are okay with it... or we stop riding.

RIP :rose
