What are some viable engine swap options on the NSR50 that doesn't require extensive modification for someone like myself. If a better engine exists out there that does require extensive mods, please recommend a place that can do the fab work as well.

Will the Jialing 125cc chinese motors fit?

What is a reasonable price to pay for something like this?

PS, when I say viable, I mean that the recommended engine is something I can order and still get my hands on without having to fly out to Japan myself to pick up. :ride

I know the crf100 motors fit with the kit you can buy. No modification just bolts right in.

Other than that it will all be cutting and welding to get anythign to fit.

I have seen the new 150R motor wedged in and the CR80/85 motors as well.

The CRF150 motor would be great but it looks like he did a lot of fab work to get it to work. Something I'm not that skilled enough to do.

That Kitaco 124 looks to be promising so I'll read more into that especially if the guy can make motor mounts.

Peirce, do you have any more info on the crf100 motor mount kits?

Pete, is that Lifan 125 in your NSR or is it in another bike?

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm reading the links now.

the guy who owns the nsr50 with the 124 horizontal said that the mounts were available. i'll have to check how much when i get home but if i remember correctly it was about $350. on top of that you'll have to get an exhaust fabricated.

if ever i get a plated nsr i may go this route.

The 140cc GPX motor (11 hp) is pretty inexpensive.......and 1" shorter than the GPX 124cc motors.

If you have a deep pocket, definately go with the Japanese made motors. Keep in mind, hop-ups are just as pricey.

Or, you can go with a Lifan OHC 150cc (13hp) vertical motor......if your budget does not allow the crf/xr100 (9 hp). Keep in mind, you have to install a lighting coil seperately.
However, I have a source for an Ape motor (crf/XR 100 street version motor from Japan), but is also pricey, Even used......just something to concider.

Choose wisely in regard to what power you want out of a motor, and or what your wallet allows.

Btw, are you still local, Romeo?

If so, I know of a couple of shops near by that can help with the install. I have yet found a local shop tho' that modifies and or can do custom pipe work. If in LA, some of the SoCal peeps can help with a local shop(s).

And who may I ask has an Ape100 motor and is holding out on me?

OK it's official. I have the NSR in my possession.

:thumbup The good news, it's street plated and all I have to do is go update the reg at the DMV.

:thumbdown The bad news... It needs a lot of work.

- Tank is rusted... Need to see how bad it really is and see if any of those cleaners/coat things will actually work on it.

- Front forks are shot to death. Leaking like crazy with cracked seals. Quickly reading through planet minis, it looks like someone local at RJP Racing can rebuild the front end off of NSR50s and put in stiffer springs for our weight. Any other alternatives outside of RJP Racing thats local?

- Rear shock also looks like it needs replacement.

- Rear brake master cylinder may be leaking.

- Hand controls throttle/clutch are squeaky and just need to be replaced all together.

- The motor apparently ran fine a couple of years ago before the thing sat untouched and not stored properly for 2 years. When I flipped the petcock, fuel started spewing from what looked to be a tube.spout from the carbs. The bike is a 92, what are the chances that this thing can be resurected back to life for less than the cost of a 4stroke motor? Since it's street, it would be nice to be able to just ride up to the gas station and not have to worry about pre-mix.

So if anyone has any spare NSR50 parts, let me know what you have. It looks like I have a complete rebuild here in my hands.

In terms of the motor swap, I would very much like a new motor but can someone give me a more realistic ball park estimate $ after mounts and custom work that needs to be done?

A quick google search shows just for the engines:

CRF150 - $2,000
Kitaco 124cc - ????
Lifang 150cc (17hp) - $700
CRF100 (?hp) - $550
GPX 140cc (11hp) - $450
CRF50 (9hp) - Maybe I can tear apart my CRF for this...

What about the knock off CRF/XR50s? What motors come in those?

Darren, I'm still in SJ but am in LA quite a bit as well now. You're right about the pipes though. I didn't even think about that yet. :( That CRF100 motor with the NSF100 pipe would have been perfect.

Keep in mind, TCR can rebuild that NSR motor for you...go thru the whole thing. Btw, another upgrade option to the NSR motor is a 63cc kit.....if you don't to go 4-stroke.

Oh! I found the Lifan "OHC" 150cc motor cost is approx $390. Additional costs: clutch and throttle cable, shift lever, and harness.....IIR

From the YSR50 site, I read that Rusteco works well for rusted tanks. Then use POR-15 as the finish coat. You will never have to worry about rust again ;)

Other option is "Electrolytic" mehtod of ridding the rust from the inside of the tank....there's a "how to" on YouTube. I have to find the link again....stay tuned.

Ray Perez (located in Sunnyvale/Cupertino) can do his magic to your suspension (forks and rear shock), and probably the leaky rear brake. Other option is Phil/Aftershocks and or Evolution (closest to us, near 101/880)

Speaking of brakes, would be a good idea to flush and replenish with fresh fluids.

crf 100 motor (9hp) for $550?...where?
Contact JTrading (jun@jtrading.net) for the motor mount kit for your NSR
For added umph, you can always install the BBR 120 kit

Let me know if you need any help tearing into your bike....if you and the bike is in SJ

Hey Romeo,

Nice to hear from you. Seems you have a fun Summer project on your hands. Any suspension work I highly recommend Evolution. Robert, at Evolution, has done great things to Anthony's NSR (setup-wise) and I'm sure he can help you with your forks issues.

On a related note, what engine is in the bike? If you're insterested in selling the pipe let me know.

Good luck,

Ivan

congrats on your purchase. is that the one that's been on craigslist?

there are guys getting 18 hp with the gpx150 with a trail bikes roller rocker v2 head and big bore kit. it'll set back about $1000 and should have enough power to keep up with a lot of the others out there. factor in mounts and exhaust... i'd say ~$2000 for the engine transplant. what do you other guys think?

Are these motors you speak of in an NSR or YSR?

I ask, because Four Door needs to factor in the length of the horizontal motors and that there is an interference conflict of most big bore heads and the front wheel, and or with the exhaust (some), under hard front braking.

I suggested the GPX 140cc because the spec says it's only 17" in length vs 18" of the 124cc motors that are listed ;)

Otoh, he can get 13hp from the vertical 150cc OHC motor, shy of $400.00.........something to concider. Especially for those of us with a tight budget.....or are under the radar (those of us that have a wife :cry :laughing )

Who and where is TCR? I'd like to get an estimate of how much it would be to rebuild the motor and carbs completely. Any idea on cost to rebuilt the motor?

Darren, please PM me the Lifan motor deal. ;) Just by going with hp ratings it looks like that would be the best bang for the buck. The regular crf/xr clutch and parts fit these Lifan motors right?

Shoot, in regards to the CRF100 motor, I mistook Peirce's post for the NSF pipe for the CRF100 motor to be the actual price of the motor itself. :cry

I'm going to see if I can find the Rusteco and the POR-15. These are the ones you just dump in the tank and let them soak and eat the rust right? I'm interested to see the Electrolyte method.

I read through Planet Minis and they are all raving about Ray. Is he here on BARF as well? I'd go through Evolution or the like but it appears that I should be getting Ray's non progressive springs. Are there any other options for upgraded springs for the NSR outside of Rays? Apparently the HRC progressive springs Honda offers isn't the best.

I'm going to start tearing into the bike today after work and want to clean out that tank asap. I'm here this weekend and will probably be having a little BBQ at my place on Sat. As always, you're welcome to drop by to hang out and eat some grub. :D

Ivan, so apparently this little NSR is an NSR80 frame with an NSR50 motor. Tail looks like an NSR80 and the front fairings appear to be NSR50. If I end up doing the motor swap, you got first dibs on the pipe.

Yes, this is the one from Fresno on Craigslist. Man that was such a long drive. I got pulled over too just past Los Banos on the freeway for doing 85 but was let go since I dragged my friend with me to ride along and keep me company for the long drive whio happened to be a CHP officer as well. :D That was the first time I've been lit up by the CHP since at least 8 or 10 years ago.

And yes, this new project bike will be under the radar from the girlfriend so I have to keep the budget in mind. :loco

ALL,

My mistake, the Lifan 150cc is actually rated at 13hp. I got it mixed up with 200cc info....my badd :toothless

In any regard, still decent hp's for the amount of money spent ;)

ps, I will edit my posts accordingly....sorry
