I know we have (or at least had) OPD cops on here. Last ditch effort.

My daughter called me this AM (I am across the country now). She was getting gas in Oakland, got out and locked her car, and a car pulls up (between cars at the pump), guy hops out, breaks her window, and takes her backpack with laptop and wallet in it, all in <10 seconds. She tried chasing the car and got the plate but that's it.
Calls OPD, no answer. Calls 911, told that OPD has 60+ cases ahead of her. It's been hours and she is still sitting there waiting.
Meanwhile, she can see her laptop moving on the screen as the perps commit more crimes.
She did get through to non-emergency finally who told her basically there's nothing they can/will do.
WTF?

I'll just leave this here.
The guy that hit me literally told me he expected me to run the red light. That's why he ran into me. He didn't expect anyone to obey the law.
I wish her good luck, but I don't like her odds.
I don't spend anymore than 15 seconds in Oakland at one time.....and even that's proven to be too long.

It's apparently the wild west over there, which sucks, best bet if she has apple devices is to go online and lock them to minimize the value to the thieves. Friend had his bike stolen in SF, found it listed on Craigs List and as far as I know SFPD has done nothing about it.

Good luck ☘️, I wouldn’t go chasing it if she values her health and life. The plate is probably a stolen car anyways.

Sorry to hear this Dan. I know you must be almost as frustrated as she is. I know I would be pissed. WTF is right.

The world has changed and our tax dollars don't work well enough.

Crime is way down in Oakland because police won't answer to 911 calls but instead refer you to a web site. People need help now and don't think reporting on a web site will do any good so they don't report. Now crime is down. Problem solved.

Cops finally got back to me. Laptop was traced to its final location, an address with known gang activity where "a gang member was shot outside a year ago".
tl;dr cops are too afraid to go there over a laptop. Not to piss on anyone's wheaties, but this is part of the reason I left CA. There is no more law and order, really.

I went to UCB while living in Santa Rosa.
I'm pretty sure I spent less on gas than I would've on deductibles.

Oakland doesn't represent california, like....at all. I'm 2hrs from oakland and it's basically texas. There are 163,695 square miles in the his state and oakland makes up 56 of them.

Stupid post is stupid. The top ten most violent cities in the US based on violent crime rate are mostly in the Midwest. None of them are in California. Based on 2022 stats, California, with a population of 39.5 million people has a violent crime rate of 499.46 crimes per 100,000 people. North Carolina, with a population of 10.5 million people, has a violent crime rate of 405.12 crimes per 100,000 people. North Carolina has a higher violent crime rate on average than other states it's population size. Two of it's neighboring states, Tennessee and South Carolina, have worse violent crime rates or nearly identical rates than California at 621.57 and 491.33 per 100,000 people respectively. Not to piss on anyone's wheaties, but North Carolina and it's neighboring states seem like a shithole based on the stats, with nor real law and order.

Having said that, Oakland has gone to shit, and their PD simply needs more members. Based on the population of Oakland, basically 450,000, there are only 705 police officers. With a population around 880,000, San Francisco has a police force of a little over 1700, the largest officer per 10,000 citizens ratio in California I believe.

Avoid Oakland at all costs. It's not worth going there, yes there are some decent destinations but the risk to cost ratio just isn't worth it.

Well, Oakland votes for a new mayor today so they are getting a fresh start after the Thao corruption scandal.
Barbara Lee will likely win. She seems competent with her time in Congress.
As a native Oaklander I wish her well.

New dress on an old whore.
Oakland is still gonna Oakland, regardless of who thinks they're holding the reins.
