Ohlins TTX36 vs. 46PRXLS

Anyone know the performance differences between the Ohlins TTX36 & 46PRXLS shocks? It looks like the latter can be had for considerably less $$. I'm looking to replace the stock shock on my Gixxer 600. Or should I just have Dave Moss rebuild & revalve the stocker?

Dave is great at doing the custom valves and making a stock shock work great. You can't go wrong either way with ttx or through Dave moss. Last time I priced it out Dave moss was less expensive than a ttx. PSI (performance shock inc) at Sonoma raceway is a great resource for ohlins products and have Black Friday sale prices.
 
Keep in mind that a rebuilt stocker won't have adjustable shock length, but IIRC the GSXR's have a rear upper mount that allows you to shim for rear ride height.
 
performance difference? there prob are not many ways to measure that without laptimes. i doubt u could find any difference in ride comfort between a 46PRXLS and a TTX. clicker settings would affect that more than how the shock is designed (since we are comparing two more-than-adequate designs). what are you looking to improve on the rear suspension w/ a new shock?

IMO...
for street riding, paying $1300 for an aftermarket shock is not worth the $$.
for trackdays, my 46PRXLS was great out of the box. im sure the TTX would be as well.
for racing, my 46PRXLS was lacking, but a refresh/revalve fixed that one.

word around the internet is that the TTX is difficult to setup for racing. but once u find the sweet spot, its great.

If you look carefully you can find a used aftermarket shock for a great price. Ex. the Ohlins (pre-TTX) on my GSXR ran me about $500.
 
I probably should've mentioned purpose. I'm a mid-pack B-group rider. I do a as many track days as the budget & time will allow. The bike is a mostly stock 2004 GSXR600 with .9 kg fork springs up front and a re-valve. I've done nothing to the rear suspension except having Dave Moss fiddle with it at track days.
 
My impression was that most AFM guys run Penske shocks, because at any non-absurd price range they're better.
 
Depends on budget. I imagine it's different if you're spending AMA money vs a grand.
 
I would buy a used one off the WERA board...There are so many being sold there at any given time, you might actually find one that's already sprung & valved for your weight...And even it it isn't, you could pay a shop to do it and still be well in the black compared to buying a brand new one.
 
Looks like the Penske 8983 double clicker goes for about the same price as the Ohlins 46PRXLS. It sounds like the Penske is more serviceable at the trackside.
 
penske is a good deal and service was only $100

but does penske do forks?


I agree ohlins is best for a reason.

The PRXLS is the older design. The "TT" in TTX means that it is a twin tube shock vs single tube shock. TT shocks are thought to be better because they have a separate flow channel for the oil to return. Single tube shocks have only one flow channel and therefore are more subject to cavitation and airation. That's not to say that a well setup monotube shock could easily out perform a marginally setup twin tube design.
 
I would talk to Dave Moss before spending $$. A key consideration is to ensure the tuner you are going to use is familiar with the shock (and doesn't hate it).

Some stock + a re-valve is just as good as a $1,300 new shock.
 
I have had Dave valve my stocker and it worked well but I am just a fast B slow A track rider.

That is the cheapest way to go but if you want some bling and still the best bang for your buck I would buy a used name brand shock and then have it thoroughly cleaned and rebuilt by Dave or another suspension guy, and while he is in there might as well have it valved to your weight if its off.
 
I have a gsxr 600 too and went with Ohlins front internals and Ohlins rear shock. Rear shock was 1k from Hardracing. Setup by Dave M. and the bike handles like a dream. This was when the economy was good though :laughing

I use to bottom out the forks at T-hill under heavy braking until the front internals were changed :ride
