A group of my friends are planning a camping trip where we would all bring our dirtbikes. None of us are plated, so we need a campground with direct(or very close) trail access. I have never been to Mendocino National Forest and am a little confused on the Mill Fire trail closures up there. Are many of the trails around the Penny Pine Campground open? Is there 2-3 days worth of trails open up there? Any other spots ~3 hours from the East Bay I should consider? We are planning the trip for late April. Thanks!

The fire damage is mostly in Stonyford. Middle Creek and Penny Pines were unaffected as far as I know. The Mendocino NF has OHV corridors though, so if you have enough gas in your bike you *could* ride over to Stonyford and back if you wanted.

What Boney said :thumbup Gotta ride Mendo if you haven't yet!

There is also Hollister Hills, which I think has 2-3days worth, though you'd be repeating some trails, but hell, if they're good and you like 'em :teeth

Don't know about Georgetown up in the sierras - may still be closed late April and not sure how extensive the trail offerings are - tho it's gorgeous and a blast to ride up there :ride

Paging Seavoyage to the dirty barfing courtesy phone...:teeth

How about Sugarpine campground.( Foresthill) You camp/stage from there and there are LOTS of single track for ALL skill levels. 'A' riders will just luv' trail 6 and the upper end of trail 5. I can show the b-c riders a semi-private loop just MADE for increasing dirt-riding skills. You JUMPERS will not be dissapointed either, I just have to watch, my jumping days are done.(Against MY will of course!) Plenty of water to play in if it's still early in the season. AND, if there's still snow, if anyone wants to try it, I'll bring a cpla. sleds for people that want to try snowmobiling. You just keep going up the Foresthill divide road till you hit snow.

Let me know if/when you guys decide to go to Foresthill, I can send you a copy of the trails with the 'good stuff' hi-lighted. I'd be happy to show you guys around.

You sold us on Foresthill (over Penny Pines area). We are going the weekend of April 26. Would be awesome to see you up there. If you could show me the map that would be most excellent!

I understand you can camp anywhere along the trail system there or even in the staging area!? Is this true? I would love to not have to pay. I assume a fire permit is needed for a stove/fire.

Late April usually is good but, as unusual as the weather has been, I'd keep a close eye on the long range forcast. Water crossings? How long can you (And bike) hold your breath?
Lot's of swimming holes, just remember that there is mostly snow runoff then and the water is cold enough to add a whole new meaning to the word SHRIVEL! The campground is right next to the main staging area @ Sugarpine. There are tables, firepits and pit toilets. Unless you are familier with the area I wouldn't boony-camp this time of the year, there are LOT'S of ILLEGAL growers in the area and now is when they are getting active.

Right now there is no permit needed for campfires but, the ranger station is on the right as you are getting into Foresthill. I recommend you stop there for a trail condition report from them and p/u any maps/fire permits you may need at that time. MAKE SURE you and the bikes are LEGAL. The rangers have bikes they patrol on and if you aren't legal they WILL ticket you, the flip side is that the rangers are VERY SUPPORTIVE and HELPFUL.

Its a bit out of your 3 hr range, but the Johnson Lane/Pine Nuts are is well worth it. Hundreds of miles of trails. Singletrack, 2 track, sandwashes. Its all there. Camping is virtually wherever you want, and free. No water, so bring your own. Everything that you see in this pic, and more, is availible.
