Oracle USA

Am I understanding this correctly, but there are only two boats racing, and one of them is not competitive?

:laughing:laughing:laughing

Beautiful. Yep this is the hugely expensive race that is going to put SF on the map. :laughing

cool of augistoron to post the vid.. I didn't catch that moment while watching live.

as for the boat vs motorcycle CC discussion.. I said that they are more like a 600 vs a 636 because it seemed that often the speed difference between them is only 1-2 knots. Today was different in all ways though :)

Like the rest of the Bay Area, as well as the whole of the United States, no one on BARF cares about the america's cup ! :twofinger

Actually, there were tons of spectators today, from Crissy Field all the way down. Why I don't know, as you can't really see shit from the shore. It's a made for TV sport IMO. Standing around trying to see something from the shore is boring as shit, and I bet most of them were only there to socialize or people-watch.

Can't you say that about most races, though? You see the [cars, bikes, boats] go by your portion of the viewing stands, and then they're gone (OK, you see a little more in some places, depending on how the track is set up, but you get the gist). But to your point, I saw one of the Louis Vuitton races on the water, and I've been watching some of the races on NBC - TV gives a much better viewing experience..

I agree even for stadium sports. instant replays, closeups, multiple camera angles, your own bathroom, affordable beer...the list goes on.

:x

Where we were on the Jetty you could see the start and 2/3 of the down wind/up wind battling very clearly.

Watching on my 60" plasma is cool, but being there was better.

But yeah, watching from the Marina, (which is behind the Jetty), would suck.

There is nothing in the world like the sounds these monsters make when the wind is blowing.Unfortunately, the Bay is too small for this type of boat, they should be in San Diego in open flat water with the wind blowing no more than 10knots (IMO)

Not a fan of Larry Ellison or his influence o the America's Cup.

So it looks like it was an exciting race today. Especially the second one. Anybody got any YouTube links ? :D

I found myself screaming at the tv again yesterday, , ,
Race abandoned for high wind.
The lawyers have won again!

Hobie Fleet 194, Benicia

I think the wind speed thing was agreed upon by the AC teams after the capsize/death that happened earlier in the year. But when the set the (I think) 20 kt ceiling, it made me wonder how they were going to pull that off - SF Bay gets regular 25 kts winds..

Glad to see that the Yanks are competitive again; hopefully they'll take two races Tuesday to tighten the whole thing up!

Are you kidding me?

I tune in to watch Formula One because it is the Pinnacle of 4 wheel racing in technology and speed, and it is competed in extreme conditions at extreme speeds. They drive on the limt, all the time.

So when I watch the Americas Cup, which I assume is the Pinnacle of sailboat technology and speed, I expect the best driver, captain/team is this case, to win, no matter the conditions.

And the race is cancelled for a NORMAL day in the Bay? New Zealand, please take the cup. We don't want it. Nor did you earn it.

I do not like these new rules. To much wind for a sailboat race. Ha. Is that a oxymoron?

FYI, the reduced wind limits are a result of the Swedish Artemis Racing disaster resulting in Andrew Simpson's death. This is kind of like MotoGP (and maybe other racing organizations) reducing engine size to limit the horsepower in an attempt to alleviate some of the risk.

That said, yes, they all failed to build a boat to handle a NORMAL day in SF.

I know why they put the limit in, but people die in formula one and they still do 200 mph in the rain.

Accidents happen, and I bet if you could ask Mr. Simpson, he would feel bad that these boats are not out there racing because of him. But rules are rules. I just want to see these boats at their limits since after this race, they will probably never sail again.
