Out of state bike

AAA might be able to do out of state bikes now not sure. AAA DMV services are worth the price of admission.

AAA won't do out of state motorcycle title transfers, unfortunately.

I didn't know you can bring a non-Carb compliant bike into CA for only a $300 fee. Time to start looking for an RZ-500 :)

Ugh to AI answers. You're correct: There is NO process to pay $300 smog impact fee and avoid the 7500 mile (minimum) limit for 49 state motos. The CA smog impact fee was declared unconstitutional years ago and that only left the 7,500 min mile rule.

Learn from my experience: https://dashedyellowline.com/2024/10/14/i-fought-the-dmv-and-i-won/. I did this six months ago. Before you handover cash, make sure you see that ca emission sticker.
Thanks for sharing the link.

I went through a similar process with DMV to register my track bike. No emission sticker after borrowing tools from another motorcyclist in the parking lot. He looked so familiar. Turns out he installed a set of tires on my car. We get to talking and now do track days and street rides together.

Anyhow, got a letter from Kawasaki stating the bike passes emissions but they don’t reissue stickers. Crazy part - sold and registered in CA. Never left the state.

Was going to register it after getting the letter but decided not to. It’s a track bike only and would be too costly to convert it back to a street bike.

WHAT A FANTASTIC READ! Did not mean to yell.

Nope. If it does NOT meet CA emissions, it MUST have 7500 miles. THEN it is a used vehicle.

I would be hesitant about that “smog” fee. If this were true I’d have that Ibex here already. I believe that may be a loophole for someone moving into California from another state or for military personal.
I had to pay a $300 smog impact fee when I moved here and registered my out-of-state pickup. I eventually got the money back, plus interest, when the state lost a lawsuit years later.

I once heard a rumor of a guy that bought a used speedometer from Ebay that had over 7500 miles on it and registered a bike in California. Probably just a rumor. Probably.

I once heard a rumor of a guy who bought a speedometer and ADDED miles to over 7500 miles, and got his bike registered. ;) (y)

Was it probably rumored that he used an electric drill with the trigger locked, and an old speedometer cable to add miles? Probably, lol.

It takes forever to run up the miles that way. I changed the mileage on a speedometer for my XR650L, but I changed it to what the old one had and documented it with a photo. I was able to shift the bigger numbers on the odometer directly, but not the smaller ones, so I needed to add a few hundred miles. My drill was good for about 60 mph. Think how long it takes to add a few hundred miles at that rate.

You'll need a DMV inspection I think. I had an Arizona bike a long time ago I transferred.
