Pacific Cup, 2022, sailboat race to Hawaii

Sailing is dumb.

J/K We got a Sea Snark back in ‘69. It had a Green and White sail that had “Kool” in big green letters.

It cost $88 and the boxtops from two Kool cartons. It was way faster than an El Toro.

Good times.

Where is CJ? He surely has some stories.

I’ve only capsized twice.

That's what I was wondering! Also, Eric has adamantly, and on numerous occasions, stated that we will never own a boat. Ever. I have a small inflatable, and I rowed him out onto Lake Tahoe once for a picnic. He was woozy for the entire day, even after we got back to shore. I don't think we've used it since!

Wow...how's this for service!

I did not know they had turnworkers in a sail boat race.

That is awesome :applause

lol - talked my SO into buying a bass boat. we’re out on the delta on a not particularly challenging day (he’s thinking everything is cool) and suddenly the chop comes up. he’s piloting, and aims for shore while i’m yelling ‘NO!’ too late. we get caught up in the shoals, and submarined the boat (we’re still sitting in our seats, and our heads were below the surface). big outboard somehow plowed us out. couldn’t talk him out of selling it shortly thereafter. :nchantr

Pyewacket is the first boat to finish the PacCup race! They covered the 2,235 nm in 6 days, 3 minutes and 59 seconds. That's flying! :party

Total Eclipse hit the halfway point early yesterday afternoon, and is projected to finish the race in 15d 23h 43m 18s, arriving on July 21 at 10:43am.

Twelve-Winded Sky also crossed the halfway point, and is projected to finish in 19d 15h 33m 50s, arriving in the very wee hours of July 24.

I'm sure the projected times/dates will change, as those times are averages which are getting thrown off due to no wind the first couple of days. Anyway, should be smooth -and fast!- sailing from here on out for our heroes! :thumbup

18 miles per hour average with some difficult winds! :wtf

I can barely hit that on my MTB over flat pavement with hybrid tires at 70psi.

love watching Volvo 70s … pic is Pyewacket 70, three days ago:

Life onboard the fastest boat in the fleet

tl/dr: “And there’s the harsh reality that the race record, set by Rio100 in 2016 (5 days, 2 hours, 41 minutes and 13 seconds) is completely out of reach this year because we have been running downwind in 11 knots of wind for a couple days.”

Pyewacket crew sipping pina colada's while everyone else is still getting windy.

Pretty neat race.

I remember when SF "hosted" a sailboat cup...a whole 2 teams entered. What an EVENT. (just kidding I didn't watch).

OMG one of the most amazing sounds is an Open 60 or similar taking off in the water as the sails are trimmed. It's a combination of water lappng accross the hull and the groaning of rigging. Nothing like it.

San Francisco Yacht Club used to run good races fairly often- I've been out for years so don't know if they still do.

guess only two boats is a sailing "match racing" thing, sorta like complaining about only two teams showing up for the Superbowl or the World Series? idk.

thought it was kinda cool we sent the Kiwi's packing 9 race wins to 8, myself, there's taking joy in life for us, maybe. :gsxrgrl

semi serious question: is there Boatlag if you make it to hawaii in 5-6 days? is that a gradual enough transition of time to not screw up your sleep schedule (lets pretend that racing a sailboat isn't going to screw it up all by itself for sake of argument)

3 way baseball games or football games might make them interesting!

:laughing:thumbup

there's the solution MLB is looking for to deal with it's too-long game issue, add a third team! :toothless

with you about the interesting part, only look at the Giants or Eagles if they are in the WS or SB. :facepalm

maybe add a drowning hazard, that'd be stick and ball progress, perhaps? :dunno

Buddy is on an Express 37 they landed

No, nothing like that at all. Terrible analogy :)

:thumbup

glad we cleared that up ... my friends and family tell me I'm a terrible person, so it isn't surprising that my analogies match. :facepalm

anyway, this style sailboat race should be more your cup of tea, maybe, and cover the SF Bay Area and HI in glory, perhaps, with over 50 boats entered ...?

certainly having fun, myself, rooting for my friend to come in 7th or 8th in his class. his team and sailboat still seem to be in there with a chance. :gsxrgrl
