Passenger killed on HWY 12 while lane splitting

Oh my God. A worst nightmare for any moto pilot. My sincere condolences to the deceased's loved ones and my best wishes for the pilot's emotional, mental, and physical recovery from this.

I saw it on the news, sucks on many levels.
:rip passenger

This is always the worst time of year for motorcycle fatalities. Ride careful, stay safe!

I haven’t taken passengers in a long time. Too dangerous and would be hard to live with myself if disaster struck.
One of the great joys of my life is to take someone on a ride, particularly someone who wouldn't otherwise get on a bike. I adore having a pillion. But every time we saddle up, I think, if anything at all happens, that's gonna be tough.

Condolences to everyone affected. :rip

I realize what I'm about to say sounds a bit naïve and somewhat impossible, but this topic reminds me of a short conversation I had with my very young daughter as she was geared-up and about to hop on the back of my bike for the bazillion-eth time.
She innocently asked: "Dad, what happens if you crash with a passenger?"
I simply said "You just don't. You keep enough of a safety margin in the bank to account for other peoples mistakes."
I realize that message was flawed, but she seemed to understand.
It pains me to see guys ripping around with their fragile other half on the back as they take chances they should only be taking alone.
Just my :2cents
(Edit: I am in no way suggesting the rider did anything wrong here. Just simply sharing a personal anecdote)

NAPA COUNTY, Calif. (May 15, 2026) — Brittany Racquel Rankins, 36, of Sacramento, died Tuesday afternoon when she was thrown from a motorcycle in a crash on Highway 12, just east of Kelly Road in Napa County.

According to the California Highway Patrol Napa Station an investigation is underway into the fatal crash on May 12th involving a motorcycle that crashed into a black Honda.

CHP officials reported the collision occurred around 1:52 p.m. when a motorcyclist and his female passenger were traveling eastbound on Highway 12. The bike was reportedly splitting lanes before it crashed with the Honda in the right lane. The female passenger, identified as Rankins, was thrown off the bike and hit by a third motorist. Sadly, the woman died from her injuries on what police say was her birthday. All drivers involved stopped and cooperated with police.
