During this 4th of July Holiday. My Cogs and Cat are inside with me, and they appear to not be phased by the noise from the fireworks, but my neighbors dog is scared to death.

I cannot wait for this holiday to pass. It is so rough on the animals that freak out. The animal shelters fill up at this time of year because so many pets 'bolt' from their yards and just run in fear. The ones that do not die of exhaustion or get hit by cars, often end up in the Animal Shelter.

If you have pets, please bring them inside and turn on a radio to help them stay calm. Your vet will even give you some doggie/kittie Valium to help them chill out.

Thanks.

The neighbor kids have been setting off fireworks every day for the past two weeks.

My younger boxer gets very spooked by this and first runs away from the noise, then tries to attack the fence. Also, the hills behind our neighborhood are steep and covered with six-foot-tall, dry, dry grass. Setting off fireworks seems like less than the best idea.

The kids' parents are complicit.

My cats pretty mellow and has been known to sit on the bass amp while I'm jamming. But fireworks freak him out.

fireworks have been going off in this neighborhood for days and I could kill them. my guys are pissed and it kept me up a lot last night.
srsly, do they set fawking ALARMS to wake up n light firecrackers at 3 am?????

for really anxious dogs, a tsp or two (based on weight) of liquid benadryl is very calming

Hey Lefty... thanks for the great reminder!

Our girls are 100% indoor, so it's a lot easier to keep them calm. They perk up at the louder stuff, but stay relatively calm.

+1 on the radio thing. Talk radio seems to have a more constant level than music stations that might get quieter in segments.

My big concern is for pets that spend time outdoors. Especially cats. As much as they might disagree, keeping them penned up in the garage with a radio for a few days might be a good idea. Unless your garage bakes.

One last thing I heard that I'm passing along for discussion: Supposedly, trying TOO hard to calm them when they're stressed only increases their perception that the loud sounds are bad. Distracting them with things that are "normal" to their routine is supposed to be better for conditioning them to the situation.

And you can use their willingness to eat or have a treat as a gauge as to how stressed they really are. If your pet won't pay attention to a treat, maybe you need to think about a sedative from your vet to get them through the week ahead.

I think I got most of that from the Dog Wisperer dude, so you can take it as you see fit. YMMV.

But by all means, if you have a pet. Pay attention to their needs!

Thanks again, Lefty!

if the parents are involved, at least you have a clear line of whom to sue when your house burns down.

As I'm reading this someone set off some firecrackers outside and my dog came running in!

Not wise to shoot off fireworks around here...sounds too much like gunfire.

:cool Good reminder Lefty!!! Virtual rep for you Braddah!
