Please school me on the Ducati 800SS

Not helpful on the bike but more of a dealer refrence.
The dealer happen to be Sfmoto? Pretty sure I saw both bikes your mentioning there last I went in. I love those guys. Until I can afford a brand new bike, those guys are the only people I'll buy from and even then, I'll prob c if they can help me out.
Def worth the trip across the bridge even to just swing by and bs with.

My 2006 s2r800 dyno'ed at Leo Vince at a blistering 66whp :ride

800 engine is a lot of fun for the low-end grunt. You really feel the pull coming out of corners but anything above 60000rpms and you wish it had more. Reeeaally thin on the top end.... But if you like twists it is a great engine around these parts. Brakes? Who needs 'em :laughing my frton tire does all the braking I need and 3rd gear is smooth enough to take most turns start to finish. Fun but certainly not overwhelming. :twocents

Yes, and those guys have been really awesome and fair throughout this.

I do most of my riding as a commute (25 miles in each direction), and would like to plan the occasional longer trip (i.e. to Santa Fe, NM). I'm looking for feedback/insight from current and past owners of the bike.

Thank you all in advance! :teeth
I had a 1998 ST2 for 7 years and thought it was a great motorcycle. It would clearly be a better choice for what you say you want the motorcycle for than an 800SS. I felt that the ST2 had just about the perfect powerband. The dyno showed just under 80 hp with a nice flat torque curve. I liked the power band better than my current KTM, even though the KTM has more power.

The biggest drawback of the ST2 is the pathetic stock headlight. There were a few issues with the electrical system being a little bit weak too. Any other issues would be common to most other Ducatis.

Why not just get another VFR? The maintenance will be significantly less that those Ducs.

I know where you can get a bitchin' one. (see link in sig) :)

VFR!!!

I sold my old ass '94 4th gen.

Even for an old fat whale, it's goddman hard finding anything that could do everything that thing could. Even with 50,000+ miles, long shot out fork seals, original shotass shock, it could still bring it in any situation. Seriously, I rode it hard, put it away wet, and ground off the center stand in the process.

That sweet 4th gen never let me down even when I deserved it. No shit. She never let go when I really needed a little help. She always hung in there and didn't do anything wrong. Right in the thick of things, when there was that nano second of fear and doubt, or on a great riding day, I never for one instant wished I was on something else. I only fantasized about other bikes when I was off the VFR!!

That bike was a daisy!! A FUCKING DAISY!!!

I miss the hell out of it.

Op, will you be posing at Starbucks on the Duc? I hear they're very good for this.:twofinger

Says the guy who rides a Vespa and parks his Sportster by the front door of Gold's Gym in San Francisco for everyone to see..! :rolleyes

Guess it was only a matter of time before the Ducati haters came out of the closet..! :blah

OP, you may have seen it but I just came across this great resource for STs:

http://www.perryr.com/DucatiSTFAQ.html

Also, it appears the bike is due for the 6k service, so figure that $$ into your transaction.

Thanks for the link! The 6K service is included with the price of the bike as quoted. Went to the beach with a group of friends today, and a good friend of a good friend just so happens to be a Ducati owner and mechanic (visiting from Maryland). As luck would further have it, he doesn't have any plans tomorrow and the folks they are visiting have a full day planned with their parents. Long story short, he's going to meet me at the shop to check out the ST2 I am considering.

I've been emailing back and forth with somebody from CL who has a 2000 VFR for sale, but the deal almost seems too good to be true (1 owner, 3K miles). He has been very prompt in responding to questions in several emails, but when I asked whether the title was in his name, and for the VIN number on the bike to figure our back registration, well, he stopped responding.

Either way I'm taking the ST2 and the 800 SS for a ride tomorrow, and I'll be glad to have an expert on my side as well. :teeth

Thanks everyone for your insight over these past few days. :thumbup

^^^I just found that ad.
Dude he wants $5500 for it. I wouldn't pay more than maybe $3300 depending on my mood for VFR.

Id also rather have a clean one with 20k miles than with 3k. Let me keep it and haggle with the dude on BARF whos selling a nice one all set up.

.

Maybe I'm confused but you don't seem to actually pay anything for anything. You throw out a lot of lowball offers on pretty much everything but have you actually taken anything home in the past two years?

Yes Ive bought and sold many things in the past 2 years for fair prices. If you wanna be a good guy and pay $5k for a 6 year old rashed up uncared for R6 from your fellow BARFers go for it. I try to buy and sell honorably.

Why not too long ago I sold something for a good price to someone and out of my own carelessness told him a problem was much smaller than it was. Once he told me what the real issue was I gave him an apology and the option of giving it back to me.
The last thing I sold on BARF was an excellent condition Ninshitte 250 with 950 miles for $1,350 (I think).
You should spend more energy criticizing dickheads selling their rashed up salvaged 15k miler 250's for $1,900 to their fellow Barfers and telling them how good of a deal it is since the sun is out.
The bike I sold prior to that on BARF was a pristine FZ1 with 15k miles for $3,200(I think)

Is there a particular serious offer of mine you're referring too? If the item is priced so fairly why hasn't it sold?
Also sold a nice solid top guitar for cheap here.
Most of my stuff makes it CL instead of BARF mainly cuz of the ghetto shoppers that would show up.
Except for the last car I sold (totally my fault on that one....nothing was done in bad faith) every buyer I had was extremely happy.
Sometimes I feel like a nice guy and post here.

Nothing in particular, just seems as if your standard template is to seriously low ball the seller and then end up with nothing.

And posts pictures on the interwebs of said Hardly to show off to the entire world..! Kind of like Bugs Bunny telling another rabbit. "Oh my, your ears are waaay too long..!" :laughing

:facepalm
