PNO to operational - and how to move non operational bike

All,

I got my M1 today. I am a 52 year old newby (but 20 years back, was a regular motorcycle rider in India).

I am planning to buy a bike (2007 model) that has not run and has been garaged since 2016. The bike looks pristine, but probably need a full fuel system/carb redo to get it running.

The bike is in PNO state.

What are the formalities to get it to operational state with DMV (once I have fixed it of course - will not ride).

Also - where can I rent a truck with liftgates (bike weighs 650 pound) to transport this. I know UHaul does not have trucks with Liftgates.

Home depot rental pickups might have liftgates.

Or if you rent a 15' Uhaul truck, it will have a ramp.


For DMV, I believe the process is the same as for registering a new vehicle. You fill out an application for registration, pay the current fees, and you get a sticker.
 
Keep in mind with PNO, you pay for the entire year no matter when during the year you register it. For example, if the bike normally is registered from November to November and you buy it in October and register it, you'd be paying the full year reg cost for only one month. See what the month is on the plate of the bike and make sure you register it as close to just after that month as you can to get as much out of the year as you can.

As for hauling, if you can tow the cheapest way is to rent a trailer from uHaul for $25. You could always rent a uHaul pickup with a trailer if you needed to.
 
What are the A to B points? B looks maybe like Fremont?

If you have a sufficient level of AAA membership and you do register the bike, you could tow it
 
I have platinum AAA or whatever it is, because my favorite cars to drive are unreliable. There is motorcycle coverage. Not a great option honestly, but its there

They will tow but the bike has to be registered for the road. My wife had a triumph that sat for a few years. I had to register it to get it towed. I think we have AAA platinum also
 
Can you transfer ownership as PNO from PNO

I am planning to buy this and then work during Winter break on rehabing it. Can ownership be transferred PNO to PNO (Planned non operation)

If/when it's rideable, just insure it and have the paperwork in process and ride it. Nobody'a gonna ticket you for it with an insured bike in the process of being registered.

Yeah, never got around to convincing wifey about buying. Still trying- she is pretty cross with me. You guys probably only had to think about the safety bike gear you needed to buy after your first bike purchase, I have to think about the additional jewelry i will need to buy as well.
