Poll: Most Americans think it's the worst of times
Older adults, ages 72 and above (lived through Depression, Pearl Harbor, World War II, McCarthyism): 56 percent say the lowest point is now;

Baby Boomers, ages 53-71 (lived through Vietnam War, civil rights unrest, JFK and MLK assassinations): 57 percent say the lowest point is now;

GenXers ages 39-52 (lived through Gulf War, Oklahoma City bombing): 61 percent say the lowest point is now;

Millennials ages 18-38 (lived through September 11, high-profile mass shootings): 59 percent say the lowest point is now.

By party affiliation Democrats are the most stressed.
I think we've been going downhill for awhile.

What do others think? Agree? Disagree?

People are Debbie Downers. Right now is not bad at all. Whats coming is what they should be worried about but there's years left yet to live it up.

Some pretty clueless people took that survey, because the economy isn't going to get much better than it already is. I don't care what industry you work in, if you think it's bad now, that's hilarious, because wait till the next recession hits.

People need to stop reading so much news and social media, that's the problem. All this instant access to "information" makes people think things are so horrible, merely because the media focuses on the bad stories instead of the good.

I believe we can thank the Media for constantly bombarding us with the bad news of the minute.

People need to take responsibility for their own lives and their own happiness.

Life is what you make it.

Interesting.
As you can see, maybe it's a question of "it's good only for some" .. one who's bought shares at 2009 or 2012 like above?

Maybe for others it's worse? Maybe that's what the responses are reflecting?

I wonder if it was better in the mid 90s actually.

The problem is the 24/7 onslaught of shitty news, in yo' FACE all day, all night. Worry, worry worry. Sure, there's a lot of shit going down around the world. There are thing that could pop off that could change society. Maybe. Maybe not.

But for people as a whole, in the US, I don't think day to day reality is all that terrible. Could it be better? Definitely. Could it be dramatically worse? Fo' shizzle.

Do people really expect constant economic expansion?

With the longest lifespan, least amount of war and violence etc, world hunger is at an all time low. Shows how shitty our news is that people really believe that it is the worst time in history

Perhaps the robust economy of the Bay Area gives people in this area a false impression of what it's like for the rest of the country.

Oh, for sure, people in the BA are clueless, for the most part. There's plenty of bad shit going on all over the place; there always has been and there always will be. However, the news cycle makes one think that the apocalypse is at our doorstep. And maybe it is, I don't know. But it may very well not be. I just don't think things are as dire as the talking heads lead people to believe.

Unemployment is quite low and, in fact, at a 17 year low, just over 4%.

This is a stupid lie presented by the media to sell bullshit. It is spin. Things are pretty damn good in the United States, fantastic compared to just 7 years ago. Honestly, things are better for almost the entire world than they were 20-30 years ago, but hope does not sell. Fear sells things.

I hate it when survey results are reported but the survey questions are not included. Its difficult to determine what the answers mean if you don't know what questions were asked or how they were phrased. Upside is great clickbait.

The entire report is available for download from the APA press room for anyone who has time to weed through the entire 481mb PDF.

Interesting that they do not list the recession and energy crisis of the 1970s as one of the "lived throughs" for either baby boomers or GenX since it was a significant economic downturn of considerable length and the energy crisis had a dramatic effect every day life from transportation to housing to consumer products.

Consumer confidence is pretty high from what I've read

Agreed first part. Lack of perspective.

Are you thinking bubbles? Environmental problems?

Environmentally, yeah, I am deeply disturbed, for the simple reason that an ever growing human footprint continues to make inroads into the remaining somewhat unscathed environment.

Today rainforests are at less than half of the area that have been historically. While I am writing this sentence, let's say 40 seconds, about 60 acres of rainforest have disappeared to slash and burn and logging. The bad part is that the population growth in the rain forest areas, combined with other factors, means that the amount cut is growing, not declining. Slash and burn agriculture is killing it off. Forty years from now, at today's rate, there will be no rain forest.

We continue to destroy the world we live in, and no amount of smiley faces will change that.

I've been waiting on the next recession for a little while now. Not sure why i keep feeling like it's right around the corner.
