I have a fair amount of experience with this.
...
The point of the story is that there are variables. Some injuries are straightforward and others less so. None of these tears heal on their own. Sometimes the surgery itself is part of the diagnostic procedure, as imaging may not tell the whole story. Sometimes an individual surgeon's motivations don't align with the patient's, so the patient must consider whether the doctor's recommendation makes sense.
Good advice. I will add my experience. Tore inside meniscus at 61yo. Large tear. PTed for a few months with no improvement. Knee xray showed some cartilage loss under the tear. Dr. recommended arthro repair & trim it away. She did.
The knee never really got better. Why? Because the protector of the cartilage, meniscus, was gone on the inside & this accelerated cartilage loss 'til bone-on-bone. TKR was required 2 years later.
Mom & my brother had both knees replaced. Sis & I are still just at 1 knee. Knee arthritis runs in the family.
Consider your family history, your age, & get an accurate measure of how much cartilage is left under the tear.
Good luck!
