Jenn, I am confused as to what your friends are doing with the kitten 
Are they getting another but keeping them separated until vaccinations are complete? Also, please say your boys are vaccinated...FeLV is the virus passed on by "friendly" kitty contact.

This place is pure awesome. They diagnosed my bengal after several vets had no clue. They worked with us well to get his meds perfect.

For a vet, There is a guy in San Lorenzo. Right off 880 on Hesperian. Very good guy. One of those vets that is not so good with people, but excellent with animals. The below cat, Zuki, had a dislocated hip. He was very fair and took into account I had no money. Took great care of her despite me being broke.
