Pretty cool car sighting

I don't think they do it anymore, but in the earlier days of Santana Row, all the really rich folks would meet there in the back parking lot on Saturday mornings

Still takes place around 11am every Saturday, although it is a crap shoot as to what cars will be there.

Hmm. Haven't checked on that situation in awhile. Ever since the "valet" took over half the back lot there I figured those guys maybe moved on. I'll have to check it out before the rainy season gets going. Maybe I'll see a brand new 911 GT3 RS. Saw one on the freeway last week. Had such an obnoxious looking wing on the back held up by aluminum brackets. Almost looked like some piece of shit a kid would put on their ricer special. But the wing was carbon fiber so may that crazy looking thing was stock. If I see another one, I'll know for sure.

I guess I got jaded in SoCal. This is like an average weekend in SoCal on PCH around Newport Beach.

I will say that I'd expect someone that drops $300K on a 599 to put better gas in it than the crap from 7-11, but hey, I'll most likely never have a $300K car.... :laughing

You think the 7-11 refineries aren't up to snuff?

I do not put 7-11 gas in any vehicle I own (unless I ABOSUTELY have to, like I'm on fumes, or it's the last station)... but since I'm not dropping $300K on a car I can be a bit snobby about the fuel. :laughing

My preferences go 1. Chevron (... and there's a Chevron Station down the street from this 7-11 that's slightly cheaper in price as well) 2. Union 76 3. Shell, but as stated, they are "preferences".

Gas is the same in the independents, they purchase it from the same refineries as the larger brands, its just not a "retail" fuel with the brand "techrolines" and such that Chevron can insignificantly add to prop prices up. Super cars run the same on the off brand gas as the other ones, and they don't have any more problems with the consistancy or quality on the engine systems. It is all personal preference but some of the myths still exist out there.

People always say that, but hey, like we said, preferences. I don't buy from Rotten Robbie's, either... seen too much gunk in their gas (at least the gas from the one that's in Salinas), not in a car and definitely never in a bike.

Well i'm just using the evidence i've researched, quite possibly your experiences are pretty rare. But California has the most stringent environmental laws regarding the petrol storage tanks that sit in the ground. Contaminants only can get in one way, and thats when they get re-filled by the supply trucks. Any contamination found in one of these tanks would be easily detected because they get inspected quite often, both the trucks and the underground storage devices. There are also filtering measures throughout the storage and lines to prevent water, debris or foreign things from going into your car. Dirty fuels associated with "cheaper" independents is still IMO one of those things that probably did happen years ago, but the tales still carry over to explain to some (maybe not you) problems with certain suppliers. Fuel quality overall is the same, from the cheapest to the most expensive, its all derived to meet very demanding criteria and it never has enough time to sit and foul because demand is so high. But I just never get gas at Rotten Robbies cuz I never liked the name of the place.

I narrow it even further. Chevron or 76 is the only stuff that gets my stamp of approval. Even the Top Tier certified Shell I try to avoid if I can. Cite whatever urban mythology or marketing kool aid you want to say it's all the same. My trained technician ears tell me all I need to know. Chevron or 76...little to no pinging. Everything else...pinging at wide open throttle.

I go for Chevron, Shell, or 76 equally....depending on which one has separate pumps for each octane. Forget where but I read somewhere that up to 1/2-3/4 of a gallon of fuel remains in the hose after you're done pumping. So, if there's only 1 nozzle on the pump for 3 different octanes, you're on your bike, and the person before you used regular and you want premium...you're still getting 3/4 of a gallon of regular mixed in with your premium. In cars or bikes with large tanks, this isn't a big deal. But when you only have a 3 or 4 gallon tank...hey, 25% of your fuel is now 87 octane, more if you continually top off instead of emptying your tank and doing a full refill.

It would be really interesting to do a double blind test with one car and about 5 different brands of gasoline and you in the passenger seat. Not driving, just listening. I believe you are a good wrench, but it ain't science until you remove your own prejudices. :cool

I'm not like Mr. Chevron or anything. I've heard pinging even with Chevron gas. Then I'll just never go to that particular station again. But Shell's V-power? Everytime. Any station. Not sure why. Maybe it's their additive.

All I know for sure is that CA gets totally fucked when it comes to gas. We pay more than anywhere else in the country for the lowest octane gas.

Yeah I've noticed that...when I was in TX I always put 93 in my bike...now all I can find is 91 for premium. :dunno

Theres still a 76 in Redwood City on Woodside Rd. that has a 100 octane pump.

I used to put in a couple gallons mixed in my RC51 and that thin ran ling a raped ape.

Well when you're getting 8mpg and only have a few gallons you're kind of at the will of the closest station.

Not the fastest or most expensive, but I love that Ferrari 430!

I filled with 76 in Oregon on my way back from Canada. There was another 76 across the street with a shell, but I thought I'd save the time that I saved doing 80mph and go to the 76. Plus it's all highway mileage. WTH, why not.

The fawking gas came out anti-freeze green. Something was wrong. I got the fawk out of there after filling a gallon into my tank and went to the shell across the street.

Never again will I fill with anything less than Shell/Chevron. I prefer Chevron as people people with high end cars always fill with premium from CHEVRON so I know the gas hasn't been sitting for long because BMW's and HUMMER's have large tanks and shitty MPG's.
