We seriously need to get a California PSA about lane sharing

I'm not an asshole lane splitter, i usually just cruise through at an appropriate speed but i've been getting the following this past week:
-people intentionally squeezing me
-verbal abuse from someone cussing me out because i zipped to the front of the intersection

I'm actually kind of worried one day that some crazy bastard is going to take me out on purpose

Dude it's LA these people are entitled. But I know what you mean dude. They are real pricks in this neighborhood, if this is where most of your complaints are.

The problem is all the best bud gets smoked up North and all those Bozos get is the
rag weed leftovers swept up from the Exotic Erotic Ball and other Halloween parties. . .:laughing

If you really piss them off, they will just open a door and you're toast....

I told my doc buddy my shoulder hurts whenever I raise my arm..... so he told me to stop doing that.

The PSA about lane sharing would probably list all the quick ways you can die while doing it... and give the same recommendation I got from my doctor.

I give a PSA every time I wave at someone who moved over for me. :)

+1 :thumbup

Even the ones that crowd the center divide closer than I would have gone by them if they hadn't moved...:wtf

I agree that billboards with PSA's explaining to the mouth breathers that lane sharing is not illegal would open some closed and somewhat empty minds.

When I used to take traffic school, before the on line versions were available, the students were stunned when the ex-CHP officer went into his "watch for bikes, lane sharing is legal" spiel...which he did the 3 times I attended over 6 years. They would literally splutter with indignation.

I've slowed down since then in my car but I'm guessing the % of cagers who are clueless on the subject remains very, very high.

Maybe even a moto plate or moto vest with something on the back would help too.

I agree with your sentiment.

Someone should just make some bumper stickers. Quick, easy way to get the word out.

I would do it but I am stuck in Phoenix for the time being and lane-sharing ain't legal here.

I wish I had a camera in court when the "commissioner of the court" pronounced me guilty on the lane sharing ticket I got in Sunnyvale..... when I protested that I had called the CHP and they said what I did was LEGAL, the commissioner replied:

"We're aware that the CHP is issuing incorrect information."

Yes, that's exactly what he said.

And as I boiled I was thinking:

"How many f---ing vehicle codes do we have is this f---ing state and why don't you people decide what's actually in them?"

And if you have the slightest doubt you can be convicted like this, read the vehicle code about the part where you must operate in one lane.... the commissioner will explain to you that it's impossible to keep your entire bike in one lane while you split traffic.

And, he's right on that point (at least on the roads around here).

Heres the VC:

21658. Whenever any roadway has been divided into two or more
clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction, the following
rules apply:
(a) A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely
within a single lane
and shall not be moved from the lane until such
movement can be made with reasonable safety.

the reason they obfuscate these rules is so that they can interpretively give you a ticket

lane sharing (sharing 1 lane is legal) but how close and how fast you share the lane is at the discretion of the citing officer

my post wasn't so much about the vernacular of the law but the general awareness of the average individual - which is pretty much 0

I didn't think about Billboards, but that's a good suggestion, as well as the bumper stickers. I was thinking television ads (local) to atleast raise some awareness.

Well, I was just going on record as warning everybody that lane sharing can get you a ticket, regardless of what the CHP says. The locals can claim you can't do it without having some part of the bike in both lanes at one time and that is typically going to be true.

I very rarely do it and I never do it in places I know the write for it.

So who wants to pony up the ca$h for a billboard?

http://www.outdoorbillboard.com/rent/california.html

Hell, I would...I know they're damned expensive, ($4,000 a month is not considered expensive for a lit billboard in a high traffic area like 101), and I believe it was a true PSA you might only have to pay for the art and install but I'm not an expert.

You'd probably have to be a non-profit to come up with a PSA that qualifies for a discount...maybe through the AMA?

If that didn't work, a decal you could affix to a bumper, a fender or a window might suffice and I'd sure as hell buy 6, (one for each moto and one for each cage).

Maybe the AMA already has one...I'll have to check...but I doubt they have a "California only" decal...and I e-mailed the California ABATE chapter to see what they have, if anything.

Here's PSA about lane sharing...

if you in a lane sharing position and are blocking the way of another biker...GTF out of the way!!! I don't give a shit how you feel or what you think is safe for ME. Get the F outta the WAY!!

I've been seein a lot of very timid newbie-ish riders lately. I've also been seeing a lot of fast, careless, no escape route squidly-ness too.

Sitting right in the sharing position with no reason NOT to share, but still not moving on past those cages = annoying as all hell. It sucks to have to change 2 lanes over, share those lanes, and then get all the way BACK to where I was, after I pass your position. :mad

Squidly weaving WAAAY around to the left and then WAAAY around to the right in a big "S" pattern as you go on down the road is...silly. I'm right behind you, making a B line...straight as an arrow, making it look like you are having a hard time pulling off the easiest thing in the world.

ok...rant over....:thumbup

That would be awesome and I would donate to the cause.. Imagine if it made the local news. Then it would have even more exposure.

I wrote to a local radio station a few weeks ago, asking them to share a PSA with their listeners about this. I suggest you all do the same with your favorite radio stations, especially since getting a request like this from a number of people will show how many are affected.

I would be MORE than willing to donate $ towards a billboard or TV ad or ANYTHING that helps get the word out.

If anyone wants a copy of the email I sent to the radio station, PM me and I will send it to you.
