Q re. out of state registration

you're assuming he didnt have insurance before moving to CA. It's not a lie to forget to tell your insurance company your new address. What world do you live on?

You are required to tell them about changes that effect the policy. "forgetting" will let them deny a claim, since the risk changed from the original policy they wrote. They may or may not, but they can.

The world I live in is the one were insurance companies will do anything to avoid a big claim, and in court all that matters is the contact. If you have a contact to insure vehicle kept in New York, but actually keep the vehicle in California, you don't have a contract for the insurance on that vehicle since they never agreed to insure a vehicle kept in California.

Argue all you want, but your not smarter than an insurance companies lawyers, and you surely aren't the first one to try and save money by insuring a vehicle at the wrong address.

I'm sure they've denied claims for less. If your policy is up for renewal and you still don't tell them about the change of address i think they'd have a decent leg to stand on. If you're in the middle of your policy and haven't told them yet I doubt it'd be an issue. I'm guessing obviously, but so are you.

OP, do what you're comfortable with.

I can't imagine an insurance company caring about registration being in a different state but :dunno

They do care where the vehicle is kept, premiums take this into consideration. Same coverage but different location can have as much as a 50% increase im premiums from personal experience.
That being said you could still tell your insurance company youve moved without telling the state you moved to. Guy just wants to argue with me for no good reason :laughing

Right, they care where you are, but I doubt they care where your vehicle is registered

I think generally where you get caught doing the whole "keep it registered in another state" thing is if you ever get pulled over, having a California driver's license and being the registered owner of an out-of-state registered vehicle. Many jobs in this state require you to have a California driver's license...especially if you're operating a company vehicle. So the license is typically the first thing transplants take care of, but they'll let the registration roll as long as possible...as described above. It may not happen to everyone, but it does happen...

the 10 day thing i so ridiculous

if you keep your NY drivers license just say you're visiting if you get pulled over and rock the NY plates til they expire.

I'm not even sure what you guys are worried about. If the plates are about to expire, walk into the dmv with a current month water bill or whatever it is you need to prove residency to CA dmv and get your and drivers license and vehicle registered. Dont even offer up info if they ask and if they ask come up with a number between 1 and 10. Not that complicated. If you get pulled over tell him you're just visiting if he asks and to shove any more questions up his ass if he wants to dig any deeper. Only way you'll get in trouble for any of this is if you snitch on yourself.

Yeah, just ask the rider in Petaluma who went to jail because he was riding a bike not street legal and no plate frame, then ran. I wonder how telling the cop to shove his questions up his ass worked out for him?:laughing

Cop: How long have you been riding that bike here?

You: Shove it up your ass.

Let us know how that works out for you.
