Question About gear...

Padded/armored gauntlet gloves
Spine/back armor

Hi Kim and welcome.

Another factor to consider is the vast differences in temperature in the Yay area microclimates

100+ in the inland valleys ... 60 in the foggy city ... on the same day!

It can be challenging to plan for both if your ride takes you to both zones

I wear an Aerostitch 1-piece for my commute. Yes, I am the Yellow Power Ranger.

It vents OK for the hot-hot-hot days in the east bay, and keeps me pretty warm, layered with a fleece sweater underneath for cooler times.

It can sometimes be not the best for riding to mid-day client visits as the back protector makes it a little bulky off my body.

g'luck!

I personally think it depends on what kinda riding you are doing. I admit, I do not put the full leathers on to go to the grocery store.

Textile is pretty versatile and light, however provides less abrasion and impact resistance than good leather. I personally have a textile jacket, leather jacket, and full leathers. I never wear my textile jacket anymore just because I prefer the security of my leather jacket.

No matter what type of riding I am doing, I am always wearing my Shoei RF1000 (love it), A* boots (a high % of injuries occur to feet, ankles, lower legs so protect them well), and A* gloves.

If I am riding to the store, jeans (not much protection there) and leather jacket.
If I am riding twisties I have jeans with knee and shin CE protection under Textile pants and my leather jacket OR my leathers.

The best advice I can give is do NOT go cheap when you buy gear, or else you will just be buying twice :)

As for the top heavy (barf has treated you well, I haven't seen the leghumpers yet), Gixxergirl (Connie) on here has pretty good contacts for custom suits that don't cost an arm and a leg. She has a similar affliction as you. :teeth

theres to many of you to name off to thank. so to everybody many thanks for the fantastic advice from everybody :thumbup barf rocks!!! twisted i will be contacting gixxergl and ask for advice about customs.

Oh yea, and being in good gear gives you a piece of mind. Which for me, helps me relax on the bike and focus on the things I should be focusing on :)

it is good to have multiple jackets and pants.

Best gear gear that I have are full leathers and race boots that I wear when I'm riding twisties or am going to be on the bike for a long time.

for around town I wear a leather jacket gloves and either textile overpants or jeans with knee guards under them. I have up to the ankle riding shoes for around town.

For cold weather and rain I wear textile overpants with the waterproof liner, textile touring jacket, and textile gloves with leather palms that are insulated on the inside. and dirt bike boots.

Wearing gear is better than nothing at all, As long as you have all the pieces you should be fine, just get what is appropriate and meets your needs. I for one would not wear full leathers and race boots to go around town shopping or when I'm going to be spending a lot of time off the bike.

Definitely consider a good back protector too.

When

I have noticed a lot of people saying they don't bother wearing this or that when just riding to the store or what not. Facts are that you are more likely to have an accident within 25 miles of your home doing the mundane than you are anything else. Why? several reasons... the main being we are more comfortable doing those things and we are not as 'on edge' as we would be if we were pushing our abilities. Not to say we don't pay attention but it is a matter of fact that the brain gets programed and whether we like it or not the usual things we do our brains comfort level allows for a bit more of an 'at ease' situation. Granted more so while driving a car than while on two wheels but it happens so wear gear that does the job well...at all times.

I don' bother wearing full leathers when around town, I still wear a leather jacket just not leather pants.

I think most people here said they wore textile around town instead of leather. When I'm riding in town I don't go faster than 45mph, textile gear is more than enough if I were to have a get off at 45mph. Ideally I would wear full leathers, but textile overpants suit me much better when I'm just riding slow in town.

I hope I didn't appear to be pointing fingers just that when talking to someone new to the sport it can give the impression that local low speed riding is somehow safer so less gear is needed. When actually the odds of having an accident are higher. And I wanted to make that clear to them to not cheap out on gear because they just ride around town close to home.

Regarding "just going to the store" and not wearing full on battle gear.

After 20 years of no crashes, I've had two getoffs over the past 5 years. Both times wearing Draggin' Jeans, which, Kim, are designed for motorcycle use and have Kevlar panels to avoid road rash. Others make similar jeans. They are very comfy, look pretty much like normal jeans, and in both getoffs I had zero road rash and the pants survived.

This xmas I'm asking Santa for padded undershorts to add hip protection under the moto jeans as in one of my getoffs, (left turning sneaky grandma), my hip did wack the pavement and at over 50 years old, that's not a good thing.

Ride safe and, again, have fun choosing your wardrobe.

so i have decided to invest in a one piece leather suit probably custom but i think i will be getting one of those when i become comforatabke enough to do some twisties. and get a leather jacket and textile pants and i do like the idea of dragging jeans because i think at the very beginning of my riding will only be weekend rides around here (fremont) ad i will also invest in a back protector as well. again many thanks!

lol boy do I agree with Kim, when I just read up on the website (ride2die).

And the site made me wonder if I should invest in a set of pant and boot?

What would you guys recommend for a general all weather gear from top to bottom? I understand you guys keep on saying leather is best, but I couldn't find any leather that is good enough for hot weather? I am real little too, 5'2" all my regular clothes are small or extra small.

Look into perforated leather. My daily-use jacket is perforated leather; it's well-ventilated and cool during the summer, and when the weather gets chilly, I just zip in the liner.

I'm 5'1". There's gear out there for us; you just have to look.

Boots and gloves were my biggest problem. For gloves, Racer High Ends for women were the best gloves in terms of build quality and protection that I could find that fit. For boots, I had trouble finding boots in my size (36) with lateral bracing. I ended up getting the first-gen Supertechs - but the current Supertech Rs have a lot more side-to-side give. I'd be looking at the goofy Pumas if I were looking for a current boot.

hey JaJa do you really havea 09 ninja? how did u manage that? or actualy how much did u have to pay to manage that? lol
