I have a trailer that I use to haul vintage bikes to shows in. It's an Onyx with a 5x8 foot bed GVW of 1800#.
In Oregon, we're not required to have a title or plates for anything under 2000# GVW. Is this also the case in California?

I may be hauling my two Royal Enfields to California once they're restored, and I need to know if I'm going to be getting grief from the CHP because there is no plate on it.
The trailer lights are fully functional.

Thanks

California has what's called "Permanent Trailer Registration" for these types of trailer - I think it's around $17 and then another $10 every 5 years or so...

if you get pulled over and as long as your town car has oregon plates, just play stupid.

any CHP officers willing to comment?

Bump.

Rel? Anyone who can give me a more official word on this?

(I do appreciate the two replies so far...)

call up CA DVM and ask them,

there is a certain time frame for you.

if you want to be on the safe side ask if there is a temp moving tag for trailers.

STRICT 55 with trailers when your on I5 and you dont need trailer brakes, but make sure you dot have TWO safety chains!!!

Can you get one without a CA address though?

I'm also confused on it being permanent but needing renewal every once in a while :wtf

From What my friend from Oregon told me once if he wanted to bring his trailer to California he would have to register it in Oregon first. He said it was real cheap to register trailers there.

It also looks like you could get a trip permit for the trailer.
Duration 21 Consecutive Days Fee $30

from Oregon dmv web site

trip permit looks like the way to go - registration doesn't look cheap to me (assuming you need a title in order to register) .

Fees

  • $77 title fee if submitting an application for title (changing ownership information).
  • $86 for a two year registration period for renewals and when titling and registering used light trailers.
  • $172 for a four-year registration period if the trailer is new and is being registered and titled for the first time.
  • After an initial four-year period, renewals revert to a two year period.
  • $12 plate fee required if the vehicle does not already have a plate (also see registration fee page for plate fees).
  • $5 fee if you are replacing or changing plates at the time of registration renewal.
  • $10 fee if you are replacing or changing plates between registration renewal periods.
Note: Light trailers registered in Multnomah County are subject to Multnomah County registration fees and are required to pay an additional $19 per year of registration. Multnomah County registration fees are due at initial registration and renewal for registrations expiring on or after September 1, 2010. Visit Multnomah County's website for more information.

The trailer does have a title. I registered it for the first 6 or 7 years I owned it, but got tired of paying the fee for a trailer I only used a few times a year which didn't even need a plate on it, so I pulled the plate off and quit paying.

I think I'll look into a trip permit. I presume this would be a California trip permit?

Thanks for the info.

If you still live in Oregon and your trailer is legal for use in Oregon, you don't have to pay California DMV anything to use it here or anywhere else in the US.

can anyone confirm that AAA can do a registration of a NEW trailer? thx.

No, but I did my trailer transfer of ownership of a used trailer at AAA FWIW. So it seems logical that you should be able to. Then again maybe it needs to be DMV to verify the VIN.

Hmm...

Running lots of trailered equipment in my business, I was told by a CHP Commercial Enforcement Officer that if it's in California and it's tires are touching the highway, it has to have a license plate on it. Period. I learned this while he was writing me a fix-it ticket for that very problem which just lead to an interlude with the local DMV. Problem solved.

I would expect to get called on it if it has no plate at all. I had a plate come off once and didn't get very far before I was passed and then pulled over by a CHP. I had the plate in my possession and he was cool with my promise to re-affix to the trailer which I ws fully planning on doing in the first place.

My local AAA won't do boats, pwc, offroad bikes, ATVs, or anything like that. Haven't tried a trailer, but that would surprise me if they did.

Permanent = plate is permanently assigned to the trailer for identification, not permanent = never have to pay for it again.

We have a toy hauler that is over the PTI size limit, and requires a title, reg, and yearly fee; our little trailer falls under PTI, and has the every-five-years 'service fee.'

The process to get the little trailer set up was quite easy - make an appointment, go to DMV, have the VIN verified, pay a fee, get a plate.
