Question of Value on Triumph

The first thing that grabbed my attention was the chain.
Looking kinda dry which makes me think about the sprockets.
Plastic bits look dry too so this bike is left in the sun.

He could of washed it so it presented itself better but hell he didn't even do that.

Sounds like the seller is trying to recoup the money spent on all the blingy bling.
Offer him a little less than bb for the mileage and condition of the bike if you really want it.

I've been looking at bikes on Craigslist, and I found one I'm quite interested in. I would like your expert opinions of value.

I'm not selling this bike, I'm considering buying it and am seeking your advice.

Seems like an almost reasonable asking price, considering the add-ons.

But....He really wants 6K for it...

As for Kelly value and all that, it may be close, but you should look it up. Service records and the maturity of the owner are a big part of how I view a bike for sale. If they loved the bike, and took good care of it, that goes a long way in my estimation of a bike's value. Good thing he's including the oil, too. :)
Did you look up the book values?

couple of questions i would have:

1. bike was just serviced at 24k but he didnt mention a valve check which should have been done - he says he has service records - i'd check to see if the 12k valve check was also done

2. these bikes are notorious for bad rectifiers - i'd ask if there were any issues with this one - this is around the mileage where the fault rate increases based on what i've read

In terms of pricing - this is actually a decent buy i think even with the mileage - this bike is IMO a significantly better buy than a 2014-2015 that dropped the lightweight wheels

KBB range values trade in at $6200 and retail at $8800.

You may have trouble negotiating for less if he can get KBB trade in value from dropping it off at a dealer...

I'd be most concerned about the valve check paperwork

KBB and NADA can be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY off on motorcycles. I'd take them with a grain of salt. Definitely look them up, but look at comps as well.

Gut feeling says there is some room for negotiation there. Might be able to get it for $5k.

Seller is not budging. Super cool guy and will likely become a riding buddy if I buy this bike or something else.

Going by the KBB book the price is fair, but those things are works of fiction, especially in California.

Thanks for the excellent feedback, keep it coming!

on KBB when i traded in my 14' STR - 2 dealers quoted me KBB price (1 was slightly under - i negotiated the other to be $500 over) - whether they are BS or not - if you're competing against a potential F It trade in situation - dealers seem to use KBB often as a starting point (just based on my experience for my recent trade in and for a bike i traded in a few years ago).

the mileage for the year of the bike is pretty good (4600 a year) it's not a heavy commuter but it hasn't been sitting either.

Hi Chris,
Big Al here in Fresno.
This is probably no help, but there's a one owner 2012 Speed Triple R with 3300 miles on it avail.
The owner is mid to late 60's. Obviosly never rode It much and even then, just for kicks .
Huge chicken strips. It's bone stock.
He keeps it on a Tender and fired it last week.
Asking 8K or reasonable offer. (!?)
I have some pictures if interested.
559-288-1490 I can text them to you.
He's meh, bored with it, doesn't need to sell it, likes looking at it, but doesn't use it.

Sweet bikes! I just picked up a '16 R, love it. 2013 vintage has the lighter PVM wheels and holds its value for that reason. Looks pretty clean, and assuming it holds up mechanically its not a bad price. The reality is they are practical fun to ride bikes, generally reliable and have a pretty good price floor given the history and nice components.

If you want a rather unique low mileage edition (w/o the R bits) https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/mcy/d/2013-triumph-speed-triple-se/6661986389.html

Man he fucked up the front with that hideous headlight conversion. What happened to the instrument panel and small cowling with the two headlights that come stock?

In all fairness, asking price seems like a reasonable starting point.

Since it's private party you can always save a few hundred $ in transfer taxes...:Pirate

Good call. Where is that shit? Did he biff it? That's a major minus in the value department.

What do you mean what happened to the instrument panel? That is what the instrument panel looks like on a Street or Speed Triple when you remove the mini fairing. My 2009 has the round lights and no cowling so that is what it looks like.

But I do agree that the stock lights and cowl look way better. Why people get hung up on round headlights, I will never understand.

few points on this - most likely didn't bin it - Motodemic has been making these single headlight conversions for years - they are actually quite expensive to do - though this is the base light with no LED - so it's the bare bones version

In order to fit a single headlight - the mounting bracket for the instrument cluster also has to be changed. Be warned on this part - you cannot mount a stock windscreen on this bike as is - you have to get the windscreen from them which i think personally looks like shit or you have to convert back to the 2 headlight configuration with the standard instrument cluster mount.

Personally i think the single headlight looks pretty good on the street triple but not so much on the speed.

To each their own but very low chance this is hiding something - a lot of people in the street and speed triple community have done this and the company is located right in Tracy.

The dynamic LED lights are pretty sweet but i dont ride enough at night to justify the $1k price tag.

I'm confused about that. I know Motodemic has awesome LED lights. And even more awesome adaptive LED lights for IIRC ~$800.

If this one cost $500 like it said in the ad, I'd expect it to be one of the regular LED setups. But it isn't.

Quick search on SF and LA Craigslist doesn't return many Speed Triple Rs. LA has a 2014 for $8k, and SF has a 2012 for $7,999. My first impression of $6.5k for a 2013 was definitely not "this is over priced". Like Moto Beck said, KBB places trade-in at $6.2k and retail at over $8.8k. If the bike is clean and in good mechanical condition, the price seems quite fair. Offering $5k to me comes off as insulting.

They have a base light that is not led. This is likely what he went with. Their offer for most lights are

1. Halogen - cheapest
2. LED
3. Adaptive led - most expensive

As far as I know motodemic is the only company that makes these conversions for the street and speed triple

There’s a difference between asking and getting.
