Hello R3 racers. I will be racing my R3 later this season with AFM and I'm looking for some pointers on passing tech, specifically safety wiring.

What are you doing to wire the oil filter, oil drain plug and oil filler cap? What are you wiring to?

Also curious about any other wiring points as well such as axles and radiator fluid drain bolt, and if you have pix, that would be even better. And catch bottle - where are you locating that on the bike?

Thank you in advance - trent

For most bolts, you wire to the closest other bolt, extra bracket, or casted pry-location. Safety wiring is one of those things in racing where you want it to be simple and easy. Drilling a few extra holes now to keep the wire short and nearby will make re-wiring a lot faster at the track. For example, you could wire the drain plug to an oil pan bolt. Or, it looks like your oil filter is very close to the drain bolt, so wire those 2 together. Use a hose clamp on the oil filter and wire to that.

If your safety wire is long and will be reused with an R-clip on the end - such as for the rear axle - buy some 1/8" vinyl tubing from the hardware store and put the wire through it. Buy R-clips here: https://www.kurveygirl.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=276&products_id=109

It looks like your front axle is the most difficult one because you don't have pinch bolts nearby. I bet most people wire to a caliper bolt as those must be wired as well.

Not racing an R3, but….

The oil drain plug and oil filter are usually wired together because they are so close. Put a hose clamp around the body of the filter and wire them together.

The oil fill cap can be wired to one of the engine case bolts after it’s been drilled.

The axle nut looks like it could be wired to that cast tab on the back side of the fork leg.

See attached pics below if that’s not clear.

The bike only needs a catch can if it doesn’t have a belly pan capable of holding fluids.
