Really Salinas?

Must be worth it because there sure seems be an awful lot of people willing to do it if you aren't. :dunno

It can be, yeah...but there's not a whole lot of new construction in CA...if you haven't looked around. Now Orlando? Gang busters...

I'm guessing a new house isn't worth $200/ft before land cost to you...

Developers are building like crazy again in my neck of the woods.... :dunno

After the display of police hardware in the Boston Marathon bombing, this one isn't a surprise. A pity there's money/budget for guns, but barely 2 pennies to scratch together for books and vaccines. The new America.

we spend a hell of a lot more on food stamps, SS and SSDI, and vaccines than we do law enforcement, per year on average. there's been a few lump sums that brought the numbers close or over one or two years but over the decades, not so much.

Cops in politically connected areas scored big after 9-11 as far as equipment, but after that, it's always a screaming match to pay cops and firemen as welfare and "social" projects demand more and more of State, City and County assets. even Clinton's omnibus Crime Bill, which made a big deal about supplying training and new officers, failed to provide for equipment so small towns were unable to utilize new officers even if they brought them on.

City councils are often full of nobody's who have never led anything before, so they get off on their first taste of power. Reminds me of certain DMV folks.

now that's reactionary and not true at all!

I'm sure a few of them made it up the ranks of their HOA, and a couple even student body president! :)

Or worse, school board member. *shudder*

Haha! Get this: City of Lafayette…water meter: $35K. Drawings: $40K…that's $75K before any permits and one stick is in the ground. Who wants to build their "Dream home"? More like NIGHTMARE HOME!

That's probably why there are so many "remodels" in Lafayette. Where they demolish the entire house except for one wall.

Even the big East Garrison development by the River Road entrance to Laguna Seca that came to a halt in 2008 is back on....

Dunno. It seems the DoD budget is pretty blotted. Half a trillion plus unpaid wars. Plus the DoJ, state, and local enforcement. Lots and lots of books for kids.

DoD is not law enforcement. Military spending is a completely different animal altogether. domestic police spending only has anything to do with the DoD when the DoD is unloading all this used hardware.

Yes, but...

...the comparison was federal budget on ammo.

nope the comparison I made was we spend a hell of a lot more per year on the benefits I listed than on police expenses. DoD and federal ammo expenses have nothing to do with police and law enforcement, which is what the outrage is here-about cops buying/acquiring more hardware. Nor does law enforcement expenditure have anything to do with "unpaid wars".

You could buy a hell of alot more books and education if we weren't subsidizing or supporting entire families. But that doesn't sound as "compassionate" :laughing
