as the title states im looking for recommendations on a good multi tool and a good knife, the knife being geared mostly for field use. some multi tools i've seen which were highly rated were the leatherman wave along with a bunch of other leatherman ones. when it comes to knives i dont know much really im not even sure if a fixed blade or folding blade would be best so i come to barf to help me sort my dilemma. what are some good multi tools and knifes?

I have a leatherman Wave, the knife blade locks which is a good safety feature, but I hardly use the knife portion. The wave is a good size easy to travel with and very handy to have when you need it, but if most of what I needed was the knife portion, I'd want to have a decent folder.

I really like my Leatherman MUT. It works well with my AR rifle and I like the fact that I don't have to open the assembly to get to the knife. I don't use a lot of the tools on most multi-tools but it has what I need (including a bottle opener).

Gerber makes really good multi-tools / knives. They make a lot of standard-issue multi-tools and knives for the U.S. military.

Check their site out, they have quite a bit of cool shit on there.

i didn't know gerber had military discounts...

Do you want a folding knife or a fixedblade?

I've always liked CRKTs and SOGs for folders. The CRKT M16 folders are great and afforable.

I have an ESEE fixed blade, but that may be a bit of overkill, depending on your needs.

I got a Gerber multi tool from Walmart that has served me very well. Unsure of the model, though.

Leatherman Crunch, its a frickin Vise Grip!

I love my Leatherman Skeletool. It goes everywhere with me. The knife blade is accessible without having to open the whole thing up.

well this im unsure about also, this may sound stupid but why would some people choose a folding blade over a fixed one?

i guess now that i think about this a folding blade would be a better option for me

Leatherman Surge for me. It's big and heavy, but it has lots of tools I use all the time, exterior knives (2), scissors, and file/saw. all without opening the tool.

I have a Leatherman Wave.

Got it as a gift about 12 years ago now, it's been with me through my military career, through Iraq, and it's still as awesome as the day I got it. The only thing is the can opener broke, but I'm pretty sure I was using it as a prying tool.

I'd get another in a heart beat.

A while back, I was looking for a multitool that DIDN'T feature a knife, because I didn't want the added traveling liability. Eventually found that cycling multitools best answered that call.

Folders are easier to carry, in my opinion. I've tried carrying fixed blades and never found anything that was comfortable.

Some people like fixed blades better and trust them more. They are also better at certain things than folders.

I'd say that unless you work in the wilderness or on a farm, a folder will fit your daily needs, be easier to carry and therefore more likely for you to carry/use.

Now you need to add in, serrated or straight blade?

:laughing

Folders are way more convenient, and less obtrusive. I carry a fairly large one 100% of the time, unless I'm going into an airport or courtroom.
