I'll try to make this short.

A couple of years ago, I bought some Puma 1000 v2 boots which were great looking, comfortable, and they passed the ankle test. Part of a panel that goes up the calf snapped off. I got them replace under warranty about a year ago with newer 1000 v3 boots. Now, about a year later, it happened again.

Would you:

a) Warranty out another pair hoping that the 3rd time's the charm? (Zero cost)

or

b) Take a store credit and go for something like a pair of Sidi boots? (Store credit would cover about 90% of a pair of Sidi Vertigos, for example)

Sidi...always nice to try something else (enough reason to switch in my book) and FWIW, I have loved all three pairs of Sidis that I have had (two road race, one adventure).

Also, seems that piece that keeps breaking would be important in a crash so I wouldn't risk it.

Yeah, I'm a huge Puma fan and it's sad that these are 2/2 in a bad way. If I went for something like the Sidi Vortice, the store credit might only cover about 60-70% cost, which isn't bad.

will you be able to warranty a new pair if this happens again??

if so, maybe go w/ another set of Pumas. if not, def something else.

Well, I was thinking that I could keep the good back of the current boots and swap out the back on the new boots if anything happened, but as Nate pointed out, if it's snapping due to normal wear and strain, it might not hold up well at all in a crash :(

I imagine I could as long as it was roughly within a year of the replacement date. But I would be getting the exact same boot (1000 v3). I think they originally went for something like $400. I could get the Sidis for about $300, or $30 out of pocket with a store credit of $270 applied.

I've actually never tried on a pair, but I will. I've just always heard good things. I could also possibly spring for a pair of Alpinestars, but I chose the Pumas based on the research and reviews I found. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong? Google only found one post someone else wrote about the same issue so this can't be a major defect, plus this is the 3rd version of this boot.

yah, the reason i say that is... yes they're great boots. but for people that dont have narrow feet, it's not THAT comfortable. especially during longer days riding. after years of riding with sidis, i had to change to TCX.

if i had the money, daytonas! but i have half the munnies, so SIDI YAAAAAAAAAAAY

You've had the same part fail twice with just normal wear and tear... I wouldn't trust that part not to fail in a crash. Get the Sidi's, if they don't fit well, try the A* SMX Plus. I love mine. Fit great, been wearing them for years, no failures. And when I crashed in them at the track, I tumbled around a bit in the outfield, and had no foot/ankle injuries at all.

Maybe I should get the new Puma boots, sell them, then buy Sidi boots. Maybe then I won't feel like I lost out.

You didn't exactly lose out, you got to wear them for a year, right? Go try on the Sidi's, if they feel good, get 'em and be done! :)

Second part of the question I just thought of...

Should I go for the Sidi Vertigo (minimal cost to me) or the Vortice?

Okay, I was able to try some on today. As I see it, if I go the Sidi route, I have 3 tiers of boots to choose from - $300 Vertigos, $400 ST, and $500 Vortice. If I'm getting a store credit of $270, you can do the math. Are Vortices overkill?

In the Pumas, I was very comfortable with a size 42. The shop only had the Vertigos so I tried them on and 42 was roomy, but I didn't like how my heel could come out of the heel cup when I flexed my calf. The 41 fit more snugly, but perhaps too snug. I could feel my toes being slightly cramped. I'm told the boots don't stretch out at all so that feeling could get really old after an hour+. Which size would you spring for?

Just out of curiosity, I looked up a pic of the old boots I had and it turns out the left calf panel was broken, too. So logic would suggest that I must be doing something with my left boot to cause excessive strain, but I can't think of anything other than that's the foot I put down the most. Could I be doing something else wrong?

Thank for all of the opinions, folks! This is really helpful :)
