Replacing a clutch "lever"

Hello....I dropped my bike as I was parking it....ugh....and the tip of the clutch lever broke off. I would like to replace it. Is it something I can do myself? What is the part called and where should I buy it? Online is okay too...

yep, it's called a clutch lever. ronayers.com or bikebandit.com will probably have the OEM part available for you. It's probably less than $30.

It's something you can do yourself. It would be much easier to do if you had a service manual for your bike, which is also easy to find.
 
Since you're in Santa Clara, drop by Santa Clara Cycle on El Camino to see if they have it in stock. They have tons of levers in stock, and they are usually less than ten bucks.

It is very easy to replace, usually just an 8mm socket/wrench and a screwdriver is needed.
 
Don't forget to lube it where it pivots on the shoulder bolt. The best stuff, in my humble opinion, is some stuff called Moly 60. It's a light paste with a very high Moly content. Like 60 percent. It's perfect for things like lever pivots, pedal pivots, suspension bushings and things like that. Heck, I use it on just about any fastener that's going into alloy.

Available from any Honda dealer for about 12 to 15 dollars. The small tube goes a long way.

Also, while you're in there, take a close look at the rubber dust seal if your bike has one. They age and crack after a while and it's a good idea to replace them if they are. Do both the brake and the clutch if they each have the seals.

Glad to hear Santa Clara Cycle had the part.

To replace, you need to remove the nut/bolt holding the lever in place. After that, you can move the lever up and out of the perch and you have to rotate it in a way where the cable comes off. To install just reverse. It's pretty intuitive once you look at it.
 
Be sure it fits. Personally I find the genuine oem part a perfect fit even if it is more expensive. Ex. I cheaped-out and got one of those aftermarket clutch levers for the trackbike (the existing one was rather sloppy). Back home from SCC, come to find out that even with the required bushing installed the purchased part still had waaaayyy too much slop. :mad :rant
 
Don't forget the nut on the bottom.

I put a $12 LP Brake lever on my trackbike, and when I was putting the bike back in the truck, I leaned on the lever a little while strapping it down and it shattered like glass. :wow

After a small hassle at the dealership where I bought it, LP finally confessed that there was a recall because of a bad batch of metal. The OEM was $65, but having the cheap one shatter while setting up for a turn wouldn't have been a good thing.

In case you're wondering, I got my $12 plus tax back. :p
