Mat Mladin won his 21st career AMA Superbike race at Launa Seca, leading all 28 laps and dominating the field at the 2.2 mile track. Despite the heat, Mladin's rear Dunlop withstood the pressures of the event, too, unlike the several races this year Mladin has experienced tire troubles. It was Mladin's seventh victory of the 2003 season and he re-emerged as AMA Superbike points leader.
The battle for second was where the action was. Suzuki's Aaron Yates, Kawasaki's Eric Bostrom and Honda's Kurtis Roberts battled for the spot, but Yates emerged with the position after making it through lapped traffic better than Bostrom to make it a Suzuki 1-2. Eric ran second much of the race but his lap times faded into the high 1:28s in the waning laps and had to settle for third.
Ben Bostrom was fourth, ahead of privateer Jason Pridmore of Attack Suzuki. Pridmore's excellent result saw him make it to the line ahead of Honda's Miguel DuHamel.
Roberts string of five straight podiums ended when he pitted. Roberts was the fastest man on the track for a time, but finished 11th after the stop.
Ducati Austin's Giovanni Bussei crashed out on lap 12 at the corkscrew. Attack Suzuki's Josh Hayes also crashed out while running in the top ten.
Mladin now leads the championship unofficially by seven points over Bostrom.
