Got a ‘Retake Your Test’ Letter From the DMV? It’s Real — and Here’s What to Do

I took the motorcycle test just for fun. I only missed 20% of the questions.

Some questions are quite lame

Just an FYI.

California drivers aged 70 and older with clean driving records are exempt from taking the in-person written knowledge test when renewing their license. You must still renew in person at a DMV office, pass a vision test, and take a new photo.

I renewed my DL and was in and out in 15 minutes. One week later I got my new DL. Guess this is a new CA senior benefit.

You mean, "how many pounds of coal are needed to motor your steam buggy 1000 rods?" Is not on the DMV test for geezers anymore?

What caught my eye was the lack of "what happened" to prompt this recall? What trend did they see in the answers they didn't like? I suspect a version (or two) of the test got published on the www and the answer trend got noticed.

Reminiscent of 10-15 (?) years ago when you could open the DMV provided test in one browser session and the answer page in another window and go right down the list. Took DMV a year or two to figure out that was happening and react.

Solid info here.
I'm 4 years and a few months away, but that’s been on my mind.

I took the sample test that @Butch linked to.

I got them almost all right, but BOY, are those some shitty questions. Either super-easy if you've done ANY studying (Q: "What are the requirements for wearing a helmet? A: All motorcycle riders and passengers are required to wear helmets at all times.") or just kinda meaningless 'It depends' questions which don't really provide anything useful (Q: "The best lane position for a motorcycle:" A: "Can vary depending on road and/or traffic conditions.")

They've been super-cagy about providing info. Like you, I suspect the test was leaked and/or people started using AI or something and they decided to blanket cancel all the passed tests.

Probably has something to do with revoking those commercial licenses for truck drivers.... Like they went down the list and discovered something else amiss they dont want to admit to....

(perhaps something to do with voting, maybe not who knows)

last time I had to renew my DL in person—in order to update the ten-year-old photo—I hit the jackpot, and was “randomly” assigned to have to take the written test, so they told me when I expressed my surprise at that unexpected requirement (I definitely didn’t get a “retake” letter—this was several years ago, now).

seem to recall that it was the written test for my MC endorsement … I may have had to redo it immediately, having just missed the first time, but I got it done. :facepalm :laughing
