Anyone have experience with peer to peer bike sharing like Riders Share? It's kind of like Airbnb but for motorcycles. And I hear Airbnb is pretty successful. Are there any other companies that do this?

Also, in before:

"this will never work"
"dumb idea"
"I would never do that"

FWIW, I'm more than willing to let a fellow BARF-er try out my bike for a few hours (maybe even a full day), if they're looking to buy a Versys. I had so many problems trying to get a test ride (even Dubbelju didn't have one to rent) that I eventually bought one, sight/ride-unseen. Which worked out.

I don't know if anyone else here is as nice/stupid as I am to let a basic stranger take their bike out to test-ride it, but I'm available via PM for any interested parties.

UPDATE: To be clear, I'm talking about a very specific situation of "I'm looking to buy a bike like yours - can I ride it a bit to see whether it's going to work for me size-wise etc.?" Borrowing my bike ain't a rental program! For that, no-one beats Dubbelju, who I used for a different bike test. @RightCoastBias makes a good point about potential 'borrowers' having no idea whether the bike owner has up-to-date on maintenance. I'm not entirely sure how the liability/insurance side of things works, but anyone who takes my bike out needs an M1 license and insurance that covers them on my bike.

I am not an across the board sharer. I had no problem loaning one of my bikes out last weekend but when a person I don't know well asked for a test ride on my brand new bike this weekend I was taken aback.

If there was a bike share program how would the owner protect him/her self with respect to liability? Who determines which riders are rated for which bikes?

It would be cool to have a way to match people who're interested in swapping bikes and go for a group ride.

Pretty cool gesture!

But I'm more of a GET YOUR OWN DAMN RIDE kinda guy:cool

I have a friend in the Netherlands who uses either Riders Share or a similar service and has done so for some time. He has shared his bike and has visited the USA and ridden shared bikes here. His experience is positive.

I'd rather rent from an established rental facility, like Dubbelju. I don't trust folks to be able to maintain their bikes properly and I'd feel really bad if I damaged a person's bike. With a rental house, it's a business and I'd feel a little less like a POS damaging one of their bikes.

Currently researching different places in France to rent bikes from for a euro trip I'm planning in 2018. I wouldn't consider a rideshare thing.

Thanks, would've been helpful to have the link in my original post!

I think this could be a good idea if they can tighten up the insurance and vetting process. It seems like it had been up and running but now it's paused until 2018. Wonder if something happened or if they're just taking measures to protect themselves and their customers.
