Rumor: KTM 800 to compete with BMW/Triumph?

who knows, and to be fair Ducati has been doing FI for a very long time and far longer than KTM has. I've heard pretty mixed reviews about the '10/'11's and it's amazing what new owners of such an awesome bike are willing to overlook. If it's not the engine than there is no excuse for KTM not sorting that out because it's pretty severe imo.

and come to think about it, the bike would run pretty nicely if I warmed the bike up for atleast 10minutes before taking off but that's usually not a viable option to have to do everytime you want to ride the bike. Fine for warming it up before long trips but to do it daily got to be a huge drag. And knowing how it could ride with a long warm up and how shitty it rides with a normal startup and go routine just pissed me off even worse i think.

I'm definitely dreaming of the day I can get another one once they figure that shit out. I for one tho' don't find it ok to pay such a premium for a ktm to have to deal with that type of issue.

From what I've heard, the 2010 and 2011 models have been much better in that regard. But I haven't ridden any 990. I don't think it's the engine architecture though- I don't see how it's much different from ducatis and aprillias that do fine with fuel injection. I'm not saying that it's going to be I-4 smooth, but I think the 990 motor could work fine at lower speeds with the right injectors/map/cams. Hopefully KTM is getting it sorted out.

:ride

A friend of mine found the fueling on his 990 to be so bad that he finally ended up putting 950 carbs + cams on.I think it's an 09'. This was after much exhaustive research and having some of the top KTM techs look at it. He is now very happy with the bike but.... no FI :thumbdown I think he has a big write-up about it on advrider.

The 990 motor has terrible low speed fueling. Akras and a remap take the edge off, but its still there. Sad excuse that such a stonking motor has a disability like this, on the other hand, once spun up, all is well. I like the 990. You looking at the SD990's or just the 990ADV?

I don't know if this was directed at me but I'm not currently looking at either. Just relaying my friends trouble with the fueling on his Adventure. That being said, I would love to own an "adventure bike" someday and it will most likely be the orange variety. Threads like this are always a double edged sword. On one hand, it's exciting to think about brand new models:thumbup. On the other hand, it probably means it will take a couple of years for the manufacturer and aftermarket to work out solutions to the inevitable first year bugs.:thumbdown

Yeah, the one in the foreground. Mostly stock, but with the tubeliss rims. The picture doesn't show it but the orange flake in the wheels and hubs is just fantastic. So good in the light. I'm looking forward to a 2000 mile trip of getting to know it :)

2000 mile trip :wow. I have a 690, if it still has the stock seat, you better have an iron butt.
If you have exta room in your tool kit add an extra headlight bulb or 2. I have less than 2300 miles and on my 3rd headlight and 2nd tail light.
No fun on the freeway but thats not what it's made for. This thing has surprisingly good top gear roll on :ride.

Let's just pray they work towards a significantly lighter version of the 990.
Thinking about a sub 400lb 800cc ktm with ktm level handling makes me happy. I'd be happy with around a 425lb-450lb for the most part. What is the 990ADV low 500lb's?
438.7 pounds, claimed dry weight.

Or maybe 460 pounds:

Can you please explain what this mean?

I just bought a 2010 990adv. What should I be experiencing?

The throttle is "snatchy" at low RPM's/ and coming off idle. Instead of being able to smoothly roll on the throttle, it's more like a light switch. On or off. There are also some complaints about steady throttle surging while cruising at a specific RPM. There has been some resolution by installing a different throttle cam and aftermarket exhausts/mapping.

my 2008 SDR had the horrible throttle twitch/surging at low throttle. akra map/throttle cam and O2 simulators took care of it.

a number of things contribute to these problems.

lean fueling at low loads

FI adaptive - open loop to close loop (vice versa)/ going to stoich/strategy

low flywheel weight

after O2 simulators the surging was gone.

PS: I ordered a tuneECU cable. going to skip the akra map when I get the RC8R and tune it on the dyno.

the throttle is still 'hair triggered' some what it reminds me of an FCR carbed bike. I just keep one finger on top of the brake lever to prevent moving the throttle due to bumps.

I still have to clutch it rolling at parking lot speeds

Is that something that you can buy and just plug in or is it something that you have to make yourself?

I would like to try that if I don't have to actually modify anything already on the bike.

Likewise, got a link to these O2 simulators? I've heard of the eliminators but not simulators.

$30 @ ktmtwins.com or cut up your O2's connectors and solder with DIY link posted above.

So in other words, it's something that you have to make yourself. All KTMTwins.com is selling is the connector, it doesn't include resistors, wires, and whatever else is needed to make it work. I sense a small business opportunity here. :nerd

Lots of people have been taking BMW 650 dakars and strapping yz forksandv custom shock on it. If you try you can getbthe bike to 360 pounds with 50 up. Mine is still 400 pounds but has yz forks. Shock I'll be here tomorrow.
