S1000R owners chime in

What does she not like about the z900?

I'm with you, I sure think she should consider a 765 for the street.

Maybe depends on what the concept of "street riding" is. For "easy" street riding, I find fours nicer. Then again, for all out hard street riding (you know, the kind we shouldn't do) :laughing the twins have some torque and "hook up" advantages for most of us. However, a good rider... well, WSB is mostly won by fours. So the jury's out.

Bottom line here is what is "street riding? Maybe she wants a track bike?

She loves her z900 but we are coming up on 2 years of ownership and it is time for something new.

She has rode Laguna Seca track day 3 times. She just wants a bike that is fun to ride, she has enjoyed then all.

Should be a new S1000R coming in a year. The RR and XR are both refreshed for next year and I guess the R is going to come the year after.

I own an XR and have ridden the R, RR, V4 tuono, and 1290SDR. They all have their charms. The motor in tuono is amazing. So linear, great fueling, and fantastic sound. KTM is awesomely torquey, a real fucking beast of a bike. I would stay away from aprilia if you need reliability though. Seems like they have many electrical issues. If you don't mind the bike sitting for weeks while you wait for stator to ship from Italy then go for it. I'm not sure about KTM reliability. Have heard stories as well. The BMW seems the most reliable of the 3. The R is a little clinical by comparison but is still fast as hell, great electronics, good suspension. Vibes aren't really an issue as with the XR - the XR buzzes because the longer handlebars resonate more.

I also agree that a Triumph Street 765 should be ridden. Far better on track and twisties, lane splitting and character in spades. Better reliability, 50 pounds lighter, same top speed and just .4 sec "slower" 0-60. My S1kR is such a beast and a hell of a handful on the track. Not much fun on Thill West at all.

I rode one. I found it to be competent but boring. It did everything i asked of it but it wasn't exactly exciting when it did it.

I did a 3 week test ride on a fully optioned 2018 and enjoyed it. It’s somewhere on my list when I decide to downsize the fleet. As an OG I was only good for 69% of its capabilities and that was essentially a track situation, most of the time was just touring on strange roads. I tested that electronic stuff but mostly stayed in rain mode to avoid liability and change of clothes.
Sierra BMW has a purdy demo for sale that is what I’d get if.

Thanks for the info guys. We will be getting a 2017+ S1000R in March or so. Gonna look and wait for a good deal. I will bump the thread then

LOL: "competent but boring" versus this:

That thunderous engine—it's unforgettable to anyone who has used it. I can only assume a KTM engineer came to some threatening agreement with the gods in order to harness the insane power of this V-twin. It pulls from a well of torque that most bikes only dream of, and hits with a top-end rush that will match all but the fastest superbikes. I'm not sure how humanity will pay for its sins, but I do know that very few motorcycle engines have ever held a candle to KTM's 1.3-liter LC8.

That's odd- mine is an incredible amount of fun at Thunderhill West.

:thumbup

I thought that mine was somewhat fun on the West side until I rode a Ninja 400 there, it is no fun anymore!

Interesting.. I am starting to kick around the idea of selling my 2019 sport package S1000R. All black, tasteful mods, and meticulously cared for with frequent oil changes and lots of PMI. Just under 3,000 miles, looking for 12k.

I love my s1000r. On street its comfy enough, long trips notwithstanding. It has a more forward riding position than other supernakeds, similar to the tuono. The motor is great, fueling perfect, sounds lovely, heated grips are nice, and on track it really shines. The oem touring screen works well. I like the electronic suspension. The sw motech blaze saddlebags are a decent option. There is NO viable option for a topcase IMO. I just use a duffel. But it not a tourer. Fast rides on backroads it shines, but be ready for stiff suspension in bumpy stuff. Its a blast on track of course.

The S1000R was my other top choice but I never rode one unfortunately. After a test ride on the Triumph SP3 and I was ready to buy, once I could find a dealer with a better price. If anyone S1000R owners wants to meet up one of these days and switch bikes for a nice ride together I’d be happy to do so.

I'd be down. I almost bought a SP3 RS in Marin, but the dealership was a bunch of tight assed "no test rides" and full MSRP + TTL on first offer. To rub salt in the wound, they offered for me to test ride a previous generation SP3 with a bald and dry-rot cracked front tire. You can imagine my joy!

However, weather has been pretty bad. We just welcomed the first atmospheric river of the season this week.
