Salinas Living

Yo, peeps, what's the skinny on living in Salinas?

There's a possibility of a transfer to the Monterey area, and Salinas seems within decent distance and much more affordable.

All stories, suggestions, nightmares, etc, welcome.

Thanks,

Marc

I go to Salinas, aka, the salad bowl, aka Salas, quite often. I've got family out there. Here's my info I'll make public, pm me for other info....

- Its a main battle ground for northern n southern Hispanics. Northern(red) southern(blue). For reasons I won't speak on publicly, both sides fight for control of it on a higher level than jus "turf wars". It's in either sides very best interest to gain full control. If you're Hispanic, try very, very hard to not wear anything thug looking. Don't wear too much of either color. Most street clicks out there have standing "on sight" orders from their shotcallers. Meaning, there usually won't be much of a confrontation if you're mistaken for one or the other. It'll just be immediate violence.

-as of today, It's about 60-40. 60% being northerners, 40% being southerners. The northerners controlled areas are usually nicer and a good amount safer for "civilians", but it's still a battle ground to some degree.

-Decent amount of the typical crackheads, dealers, hookers, n tweekers n the crime associated with them. So.... break ins n car thefts are pretty regular.

-black on black, or black on whoever crime isn't too bad. Its a Hispanic run area. Blacks know they're severely out numbered n n usually keep their beefs personal rather than group things.

-The notorious MS13 tries makin plays out there, but they're hated by both sides, so they're not much of a huge issue.

- there are "white areas" but even those can be pretty rough n trashy. As far as nice, clean, peaceful suburb type areas...... Mmm, not too many. In all honesty, 2 blocks away cud still be a war zone.

-Cops out there do not Fuck around. Cool n all for the most part, but by all means, they aren't punks. They deal with straight killers daily.

-a lot of prisoners parole out there, and if they carried any clout inside, they're gonna carry even more clout on the streets n hype up all the soldiers. Anytime a big name gets paroled from either side, you'll see an uptick in violence.

In all honesty, if you mind your own business, don't walk around like a tough guy wearing too much blue or red, you should be alright. If you have a nice car/bike, make sure you have a locking garage.

That all sounds about right. I don't think the OP is involved in any of that gang lifestyle, but still, it can always spill over and to some extent it affects the whole community.

OP, you can also try looking in Prunedale and Hollister for similar housing prices and generally lower crime communities, although there are still crime and gangs there too. Gilroy is another good city nearby to look at. The housing is more expensive than Salinas or Hollister, but should be a bargain compared to the City.

Drove through salinas a few years ago looking for Steinbeck's ghost, went and had some mexican food, came out and there's a car with its entire side caved in and a black toyota pickup driving away dumping all of its coolant with the front end smashed. I was like "oh that guy must be clearing the intersection," nope the fellow was doing a hit and run. Weirdest thing I've seen, definitely max out your uninsured/unlicensed driver insurance.

Thanks, Dave. The job would be in Monterey, so the home must be within short/reasonable driving distance to make things work.

I was in Marina Saturday visiting some old friends (I lived there for 39 years). It is really going ghetto. My buddy, who has lived there his whole life, is selling his house and getting out. Illegal aliens everywhere and Salinas is worse.

Sure, but gang violence is in every third or fourth town in America. It's just a matter of choosing which side of the tracks to live. And besides, I don't mingle with the gang types. So unless it's in my own street, which I wouldn't live there to begin with, otherwise I wouldn't even notice it.

Salinas has big time gang activity, much worse than Oakland. Look into Marina or Seaside.

Seaside might have an answer although its getting expensive. There are some reasonable spots in pacific grove and way out in carmel valley(45 mins at times) or on the lorales grade sometimes. Del rey oaks is a possibility as well.

yeah - i'd look at pacific grove. super cute area, and bargains can be found. carmel valley not so much (with respect to affordability - not appeal). am thinking you meant laureles grade - which is awesome, and a fun road for commuting to the track. but in any event, have been looking for property in that area for a few years now - anything reasonably priced is waaaay out in the hills (and way south and east of carmel valley) - and much of it has utility issues.

I've never actually read the sign for the grade. I go over it almost everyday but have never learned to how to properly spell it. Which is what I would say of a lot roads here.

There are some spots in tasahra(sp?) and cachauga. There are otehrs that can be found too though.

Is there something specific you've been looking for a lot of places here get sold before they go to market.

Storm- sadn city has a pop of 500 people I think it is. It's really shops and business's not people or homes.

Sand City is becoming the "It" area for artists and trendy types replacing plumbing warehouses, auto body shops, and moving storage buildings. Some of it's good, most isn't... :laughing

They just had their West End Festival: http://www.westendcelebration.com/

There is one nice neighborhood, but it is real close to the freeway, behind a Home Depot.

This thread is turning me off on the idea of going south. :(

I still wonder if way west/southwest in Salinas would be safe from all the reports above.

no worries babe - knew what you meant. yeah - been looking for a place near carmel valley town. second home, and potential future retirement property. walking distance to the wineries and restaurants. looking for a house with charm, and a bit of land. in all of california - this is hands down my absolute favorite place.
