Salt water reef tanks.

Have a small 10 gal tank and I had a major...major algae problem. Got some snails and they seem to do the job pretty good but they do climb on top of my feather duster and kinda bent it cuz of their heavy shells. Have 3 damsels as well and yup they are mean faakas. Very territorial. Good to know other riders have salt tanks

I just started again after my dad's tank got a huge crack and had to sell all our fish. Picked up a 12 gal acrylic with an Eclipse hood. I'm curing some really fresh live rock in there. I tested the water and I'll be ready for fish in a week or two.

Here is a pic of our tank my freshman year of college.

We also had this guy for a little while, but our heater went wacko and he died. :|
Took this picture when we went to pick him up. :)

major fail

It didn't go out, it went wacko to the extreme in the sense that the temp raised exponentially.

And I posted pics :)

I didn't take pics because everyone in this thread has seen rocks, hermit crabs and damsels but I'll take some later and post 'em up.

The yellow tail died a week ago. I'm never buying fish from 6th ave again. 3/5 fish I bought there died.:thumbdown

I wish my clowns would host in this guy. Been a few months but they could care less about him.

Anyone have any zoa frags they want to sell? Something like this would be nice. :) I met a guy on reefcentral but just as well do biz with a barfer.

I can't play with corals yet. My nitrite went up to 0.25ppm after I added my clown and I gotta wait for it to calm down.

that is bcuz they dont live in those type of anemones. and if he tried to host it, the thing would retreact and shrink and if the clown over zealously tries to host it the anemone will probably die, so feel lucky! you gotta get the right kind! but they are expensive :(

Yea get a bubble tip anemone, that is your best bet at hosting and also being easy to keep. You could get an H. magnifica but they get huge.

I made the mistake of buying a H. magnifica once. Took over half the tank in a few months and the fish(except damsels and clowns) couldn't get near it.:laughing

I'd love to put one together in my new place. There's a perfect spot for one in the family room. What's it cost for a decent setup?

How much $$$ ya got? My dad's retired but he sank $1500 until he got cocky and bought a sea cucumber which got overstressed and threw its toxic guts everywhere and killed everything in the tank.

How big of a tank do you want? For a 100 gallon you can spend $1500 on just the tank and stand + good lighting. You also need a sump and a skimmer, minimum, just for fish. Add power heads and a chiller if you want to be able to grow corals, plus your lighting needs go way up depending on the types of corrals you want to grow. Buying water from a local shop is about $1.25 a gallon or you can make your own if you have a RO water filter. I'm learning the hard way that this is an expensive hobby, not just a cool piece of moving art in the family room.
Also, a lot of cool fish and coral are expensive!

Budget would be $1500-2000. I'm not sure how big I'd want just yet. Plus I'd have to buy the stand for the tank that would house all the equipment.

For $5000 you could get a tank around the 1000 gallon range and get sharks/rays.
