Yup...looking for a used compact SUV for my daughter. She will be driving to LA and back occasionally for school. Reliability and safety are my biggest concerns.
We are looking mostly at the Rav4 and the CRV but are open to suggestions. Read some crappy reviews on the Rav...seems design flaws turn some minor repairs into big expensive deals, like removing the engine to replace the water pump? Anyways your input is appreciated. Our budget is under $10,000. TIA :)

She wants an SUV just because and for cargo room. My opinion is that you get allot more for your money with a car. However she is a wonderful kid and an outstanding student so I will give her whatever she wants. lol

Well if practicality is out the window why not just give her 10k and let her choose?

Ahh, Reli the SUV isn't for you, What You think is butt ugly, doesn't matter.

Student age youth, like the Element, Big time, especially if they visit the beach.

I put 300,000 miles on a 02 CR-V. It was the most dependable, trouble free car/truck, I'd ever had in my life.

Used market is doing well so expect to pay a premium price for a quality used SUV that isn't a worn out hunk of shit. I just sold a really clean 2003 4Runner and had to schedule people because of the demand.

Good places for reviews:

That market is kind of unique to that generation of 4Runner and Tacomas. We sold my wife's 2001 4Runner on CL last year. Within 20 minutes of posting it, we had about 15 emails with cash offers to immediately come and pick up the truck. We probably could have got another $1500-$2000 for it based on the level of interest.

I vote Ford Escape hybrid.

Certain students maybe...........not the average chick who just wants something dependable and mainstream. Elements aren't mainstream, they're way too weird. Most people, even young people, don't want to parade around being the outlier.

If you are going to buy something uber-boxy because you like the uber-boxy look, get a Nissan Cube or an old 1st-gen Scion XB. Way better looking than that turd known as the Element. :thumbdown

Otherwise..........CR-V ftw.

Small SUV rollerskate types usually have better visibility than a car with similar capacities. I love having good visibility out of my vehicle, which is to say I hate driving most cars less than about 10 years old

Yep, these days if it's not an SUV, it's got slots for windows.
