are all nice and shiny, then people bring them to SF, and bums tip them over. HA HA!
SB435 has passed.
http://totalcapitol.com/?bill_id=200920100SB435

SB435 requires any bike manufactured after year 2013 and later to have matching federal EPA labels on the frame and exhaust, and have to meet federal sound level regulations.

Penalties are:
1) Fix-it tickets for the out of spec pipe
2) $300 fine for being over the sound limit.

Before the hearing on June 28th it clearly had the votes to pass but so many motorcyclists showed up for the hearing they didn't find the votes to pass until 6:30 p.m., long after everyone was gone. Even at that, the only way they got the 8th vote it needed was when one of the legislators who originally voted "no" changed his vote at the last minute when he realized it wouldn't pass.

No smog checks! WOOT!

Latest update: the bill's been amended to start with bikes built after Jan 1, 2013:

I am going to write one for you, tomorrow... and post it, just print, sign, and mail. or, you can call. they all have voicemail.

the rally will feature motorcycle-friendly legislators who will speak on motorcycle rights.

As much as I don't want this to pass... How do you argue against it?

there is no need to argue anything. we are in favor or stopping and silencing this legislation by offering 'no votes and no support' for Senators who support it.

thankk god I didnt sell my pipes or alter my chip. Jeez, my bike is a 2000 so I will have to do it for a year prolly.

Oh well.

"I don't want to be inconvenienced by no stupid laws." ... ?

Good point Steve. How do you?

How about an argument over tax revenue? This bill would kill the aftermarket parts market. That must generate a substantial amount of sales tax revenue and employment. Putting this industry out of business in a time of deep recession is bad policy.

This bill would place a further burden on an industry (the motorcycle industry in general) in a time when dealerships are struggling to stay in business.

This bill will discourage people from buying motorcycles which are much more economical than cars. An average bike might get 50 mpg (I know that's a bit high) which rivals the mileage of a hybrid car. Motorcycles are a green technology and should be supported as such.

Any of these working for anybody out there? Just pulling stuff outta my....

I just hope none of you who are agains tthis law are environmentalsts. or are "green" cause the smog situation is california has been greatly reduced and the amound of piece of shit cars has gone down dramatically since the "inconvieniant" law started.

it is only fair guys. it is once every tow years for christs sake. big deal.

It's just a revenue generator for the state.
+1

It was more relevant checking emissions of cars a while back. Nowadays cars are more reliable emissions wise. Still cars are checked every two years. Smog checks might not of started if cars are as reliable as they are now.
To start smog checks on an entire new category of vehicles with same amount of advanced emission controls on them. Is only being done for one reason, revenue generation.

Do you really believe that this bill will do anything to improve the overall air quality in California? Diesel trucks and farm equipment put out a VASTLY more significant amount of crap than bikes do...and there are more of them that do a lot more miles per year than any of us do on our bikes.

This is a revenue generator that is being sold as "green".

By the way, have you noticed that everything is "green" these days? Every project, no matter how polluting it is, is touted as being "green".

The only thing "green" about this bill is the color of the money coming out of our pockets.

And for those who can't pass because they own a 49 state bike?

How much you want to bet that they come up with some provision that if the bike can't pass the test for less than $1000 in work, you can get an exemption or something that can be renewed each year for a fee?

I'm just making that up, but that's all Sacramento is doing...

If motorcyclist are ripping out there emission systems, they are not so green anymore.

I'm for smog inspections. No, test, but inspections to ensure emission systems are still intact. I'm not a 'loud pipes save' believer.

If you ride up in the hills of the bay, you can tell at how dirty the air is.
