I'm a Catholic, and I think that's one of the most butt-ass ugly buildings I've ever seen. Whoever decided to spend 200 million bucks on THAT should be hauled up in front of the IRS for criminally brain-damaged use of untaxed funds. Either feed kids with it, or build a cathedral that doesn't look like an upside-down glass fucking bucket with the UGLIEST statue of Jesus EVER CARVED as a centrepiece.

AMEN! Seriously - all the freaking money they spent on that and can you imagine how much they could have helped improve the lives of poor school age kids in Oakland? Or rehabilitated hundreds of houses in West Oakland for low income families? Now that would be TRUE catholic charity, not this ginormous white elephant.

It always amazes me that some religions do just fine with a tent - but the catholic church has to be ostentatious - that kind of hypocrisy is exactly why I dropped away completely when I moved out of my family home.

Oh.. ,.. ohh... i looove, loooooove this. Let's say we uglify the nice section of Oakland I posted about as being nice .. and feed the kids while giving them an uglier city....

not to mention that a) probably, the church which built this was using its own money b) if it wasn't its own money, there are probably tons of other places to take the money from..
