Shasta ADV Campout and rides 13-15 MAY 2022 Redding CA

Highly recommend riding north along HWY 1 to HWY 36 or 299 both great rides north that are not the 5 :ride

:thumbup

looks like this event will dove-tail nicely with the OMC’s planned Sheetiron the following weekend ... just went and checked and it looks like registration for RDR’s Shasta ADV Campout still isn’t open?:

REDDING DIRT RIDERS

I’m going to sign up for the Shasta ADV Campout ASAP. looking forward to Mr Evans’ keynote talk, the Africa Eco Race is epic ...

depending on when I can get the RDR’s .gpx files, I can play with my smartphone and see if I can make it work as a GPS with Mr 1962siia’s Gaia and/or Avenza apps.

thanks for the tip about Hwy 1 and 36/299 ... I have a fun fireroad route from the Bay Area that takes me north through the Mendo NF and then over Bully Choop. I’ll take a week or two off work starting May 9th ... see how much snow I find still left up high in May this year. :laughing

may also see if I can find a way to approach Chappie OHV from the west/French Gulch/East Fork Road/Westside Rd? is East Fork Rd still gated at the west end? think it was last time I looked ...

getting kinda excited to maybe head up to Redding for a couple weeks in May and hit Stonyford on the way home ... w00t! :ride

Hey John...
This is what I was trying to do several times (from the Weaverville Rally) on the TW200. Ran outta time one time (the day before, of the year of the Carr fire). I was following a route that indicated a closed area of the road from a 100 yard landslide. Didn't (quite) make it to the slide.
I have paper maps that show most all the dirt roads and trails from Trinity Lake to the Shasta Dam, Chappie park area.

This sounds like it might be a fun event.
Since I've been spending a fair amount of time in Anderson (9 miles from Redding). I should be able to schedule in a visit during that time frame.
Set up a truck/tent camp spot.

Question to 1962siia about the Gaia and/or Avenza apps. Which one do you use most or recommend?
I use an Android phone.

That is awesome! would love to see the tracks for that I went to SSU and frequented middle creek/penny pines Always wondered if I could get all the way home on dirt.

Our dirt loops will actually take the east fork road, there is an official staging area there now for the last few years. Currently county line/highland ridge/and the top of the OHV are all about a 1' deep in snow/ice. We just held the annual poker run successfully however had to stay low in elevation.

I have several other members helping with the GPS tracks, once we can get the GPX built with additional way points to see and gas stops noted I will have them proof them out using all the platforms. We plan to send out the GPX track a week prior when registration closes.

Currently dealing with some tech gremlins and hope to have registration up ASAP

sounds good, I’ll keep an eye out for registration to open. :ride

I don’t have any tracks, but it’s all big maintained fire roads I take north through the Mendo NF to get to Weaverville/Redding, pretty sure they all show up on a AAA map ...

heading north from Middle Creek/Penny Pines the fireroad route I use would be M10 to M3 to FH7 to M4, M2, M22/Raglin Ridge Rd down to Red Bluff for gas and back up on Pettyjohn Rd/35/Rat Trap Gap/45/Tedoc Rd to Hwy 36/Platina/Platina Rd/A16 to Bully Choop Rd to E.County Line Rd and down to Hwy 299 at Buckhorn Summit.

the route on the west side I would use from Penny Pines would be Lake Pillsbury, M1 to Covelo, Minna Road to Kettenpom to Ruth Lake, Cedar Gap, Wild Mad Road over to Hwy 36, Harrison Gulch, Deerlick Knob/Deerlick Springs to Hwy 3/Douglas City.

looking forward to figuring where the Shore to Sky route goes on Saturday ... hope to see you in May! :thumbup

That is awesome! you have some of the best roads for the west side of our area listed there.

Shore to sky loosely will RD 1 out of chappie to east side road to trinity mtn road towards Trinity lake, county line, highland ridge, county line, Lewiston turnpike, south shore road in Whiskeytown NRA, then hopefully Peltier valley, mule town, iron mtn rd, copely mtn rd back to camp.

A lot of that will be snow/ice dependent which we should be good in May. We want to keep this first year non-intimidating for the three main routes. Sunday dual sport route will be all within the OHV park and shorter millage, but have more challenging riding and will go past Rick Pickens memorial on Hanglider ridge. :ride

yes, "non-intimidating" is my cuppa tea! :laughing

thanks for the heads-up about the Shore to Sky route on Saturday, I enjoyed just now poking around on google maps for an hour, and think I have a nice rough idea, looks like an awesome ride. :cool

have fun and good luck with the pre-running/gps stuff, and see you in the springtime! :ride:gsxrgrl

GPX track updates and WYBDR

Hey all! GPX tracks are coming along nicely :ride
Shore to Sky route will be closer to 90% dirt and 120 miles with gas at around the 70 mile mark. If the temperatures are hot there is also a stop in Whiskeytown to take a dip in the lake!

We are also exploring the possibility of adding a WY BDR movie screening for their latest route this year. Who would be interested in seeing that added to the schedule for Friday night?

I'm interested in a Friday Night WYO BDR movie! :wave:party

hope to see you, soon ... :ride

I did a couple days in the OHV there last week and the riding was fantastic !. What a gem of a place.

Well, I signed up today with less than 24 hours left to get the early bird rate ($85).

If your on the fence you have thru tomorrow to pull the trigger to save $20.

Good timing as I just purchased a small Toy Hauler to R&R in before, during and after the event.

Question... is it possible to arrive a day or two early and camp in the same camp spots that the event will use?
Then I wouldn't have to move come Friday.

Just registered and looking for a riding buddy or two interested in leaving early for this event.
Hoping to leave the E Bay on Tuesday(5/10) or Wednesday (5/11) to take my time getting there.
I want to go via Berryessa, Clearlake, Mendo NP or HWY 1 to 36, 3 and 299.
Maybe ride the alt route, albeit faster, on Sunday for a Monday afternoon (5/16) arrival back home, safe and sound!

my plan is similar, and leaving early to ride north through the Mendo NF to get to this Rally is really the main reason I signed up ... :laughing

what has worked well for me meeting BARFers in the past has been camping on Anthony Peak and catching up with each other up there.

my vague plan would be Anthony Peak on Tues, camp somewhere on the way to Bully Choop on Weds, and catch up with m0t0_ryder on Thursday at the Rally campground.

here’s some maps that sort of show the fireroads I like to take north:

... here's a link you can zoom in and out with ...

... it's basically 400 miles from
Lower Lake to Weaverville of (easy, KLR) dirt fire-roads ... :ride

here's a quick-n-dirty link to a map of Weaver Bally, Bully Choop and Shasta Bally you can click on and zoom in and out on ...

(the bottom map just shows County Line Road, the fireroad from Bully Choop down to Hwy 299)

I’m taking the week after off from work, so I can wind up at Sonyford that following Friday, for the Sheetiron, so I’d only be good for a half day heading south/home ...

hopefully, some other folks will chime in, too, but we have sort of a beginning idea of a plan, between the two of us, anyway ... :gsxrgrl

pic for motivation:

Bully Choop Mountain, Shasta County, California, with Mt Shasta on the horizon.

Cal Fire fixed the broken gate for their watch tower, so it’ll be a matter of luck getting to this spot in the future, but the left side of the pic shows some of the Shasta Rally part of the world ...

my avatar is Anthony Peak ...

Absolutely! The club will be setting up Friday day and securing the camping sites. However we wont be kicking anyone out, just come by the check in table after 4pm on Friday. :thumbup
