I'm looking for some ideas. Inspired by the dirtbag challenge I've been wanting to build a small bobber over the winter. I really want to do something like this guy's SL100 (http://chalopy.blogspot.com/2010/04/lilac-alley-sl100.html). I might actually buy an old SL100 and do the same, I'd prefer something 650 or small. I'm even considering the popular XS650 route.

Just wondering if you guys had any good bike choices or ideas for me... :ride

Usaully guys with a small bobber get an R1 or a hayabusa

Hardknock sells 200cc and smaller kit bobbers pretty cheap. Chinese engines. You assemble. Instant bobber douchery. Perfect for the guy who doesn't weld or fabricate....

Suzuki GN 400 2 year blip on the radar, same motor as DR400, so once you're done kneeling and bobbing, and find there is no resale, you can at least sell the motor. Any of the mid 80's standards are easily transformed.

Sure you don't want an ex-dirtbag bike? I know of one :teeth

GN 400 - used Sportster shocks $24, used HD fishtail $8- hoping it makes it sound like a Harley when I crank all 396cc's... I can take pics of work in progress if you pretend to care.

my V-Star 650 is sometimes a candidate for bobbers. Fairly easy to find one, and cheap, but they're not very light. Here's a guy who sells bolt-on kits for it. I considered bobbing mine, but the parts add up fast. Maybe when mine gets older and a little more beat.

And here's an example of the V Star 650 Custom in black (my model/color bike exactly). This guy has mainly worked on the rear so far, using blue collar fender, saddle, lights and such. He changed the bars and mirrors also. The front fender and lights look stock.

I like this Yamaha a lot! cool pix too (which I've posted before).

And this is just a freaking awesome moto! Not small though. If I could work sheet metal, weld, etc, I'll be out in the garage right now trying to emulate the cool factor in this one.

Sheet metal? Welding?

Only see a little of each on that bike.

Weld on hard tail kit - $125 (does require welding)

Replace the shocks with solid struts $90 ( same number of visits to the Chiropractor for crushed discs as the hard tail)

Trailer fender $30

Seat $125
Rear fender stays some 3/8" rod from home depot.

mustang style tank $90

Old purse for tool bag $8/goodwill store

Don't copy: Make your own cool - what is stopping you?

I had a V-Star Classic and a Busa. My wife still has her black V-Star Custom.

She hardly rides it, so maybe I'll strip it down and turn it into a Bobber. :cool

Matt,

have you checked out bikeexif.com yet?

If you haven't go through the back log of the featured bikes. It should give you a areally strong idea of whats available out there.

Personally, I love the super sigles and choppers Roland Sands makes out of KTMs.

There's a decent blog about building weird performance oriented choppers you can check out here:

A few years ago I saw a really decent bobber built off of a motor from a totalled Buell Blast.

Yep, that and pipeburn.com is what inspired me. I just need to finish off my TW200 project and move onto something else. I've also been temped by this BMW R60/5 build: http://theglassboot.blogspot.com/2010/10/bmw-r605-custom.html
Decisions, decisions.
