Well, at least it seems the question of whether the occupants knew what was happening seems to be answered.

Apparently the implosion happened instantly, catastrophically, and the occupants had no idea.

 
I would have guessed it would happen in a tiny fraction of a second when it did.

That doesn't mean they didn't know they were fucked before it happened....
 
There were earlier assumptions that the crew did indeed know they were fucked. Supposedly they had initiated emergency procedures meant to bring the sub back to the surface asap. Dropping attached weights and such.
