My wife and I were driving home today from Capitola and I decided too take Soquel San Jose Road home. Big mistake. Huge stoppage with a blue/red flashing light visible for too much time. I managed to U-turn safely and head home on 1 and 17. Any idea what happened today? Not that it matters, but I am curious.

The activity on Soquel San Jose Road yesterday evening was due to planned overnight roadwork.
According to the Santa Cruz County Department of Public Works, crews were scheduled to perform final road striping as part of the 2026 Pavement Management Project. [1]
  • What happened: The night work took place between Sunday and Wednesday nights (September 28–30) and required active traffic control.
  • Where: The work impacted the stretch from Soquel Drive to Olive Springs Road.
  • The disruption: Flashing hazard lights, slow-moving construction vehicles, and brief lane holds or alternating traffic caused the temporary backups and emergency-style vehicle lights drivers saw on the road. [1, 2]
There were no major accidents or emergency incidents reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) or local dispatch on that route yesterday.

Thank goodness it was not an accident. Thank you for this. We were stopped for perhaps 10 minutes, and in that time just one vehicle and 2 bicycles came down the road.
