I had a pair of acoustic research AR9's that I bought in 1985 that were audio perfection and enjoyed them until tinnitus killed my joy of listening to music and sold then 5 years ago.
But listening to music at reasonable volume is enjoyable again and my wife misses music and I need to upgrade for xfinity music channels played on the TV. I still have my old receiver, CD/DVD player and i just need speakers. I thought of surround sound, but primarily music will be enjoyed. Room is aprox 25' long x 12' wide.
Budge is $1000 + - $200.

I have the receiver, DVD player ect. I just need the surround sound speaker system to go with it. any recommendations?.

Great price/value on good sound for the money, but buy a pair of the bookshelves first to make sure the sound is to your liking and if not, $12/box return shipping withing 60 days.

These would be your front left/right speakers if you enjoy them.

If happy with those here are the surrounds and center speaker to match.

This is a tremendous subwoofer value; there is no better value out there for a very good sub. 22hz extension with room gain which is amazing given the price.

If you want stereo sound quality, I'm running AudioEngine A5s with the S8 powered subwoofer and they sound amazing.

For surround sound (7.2) I'm still running an older Bose system (Acoustimass) and haven't found a reason to upgrade that yet. You can find them used on the cheap these days.

My in laws had a similar BOSE surround setup back in the day (double cubes) and my friend did as well (single cubes).

The bass box/sub only plays down to 40hz or so though and the main drivers are tiny but does sound bigger than its size but the OP can do better as decent quality "entry level" speakers these days compared to when I was young are very very inexpensive. And the value offered by RSL subs is unbeatable.

Definitive Technology makes excellent speakers for a good price. I have them in three of my speaker zones.

Audio Engine also makes excellent speakers for the money. I have a pair plus one of their subwoofers in my office.

Bose sucks big time. One can find vastly superior speakers for half the price.

That is indeed an extremely impressive woofer at any price!

I have a complete Sonos system in my home and it’s totally wireless. All 8 zones.

However, I don’t use any Sonos speakers. I just use their preamps and amps to drive speakers of my choice. Ceiling mounted Definitive Tech in my kitchen. Definitive Tech satellites and a sub in my living room, Audio Engine satellites and sub in my office. B&O in my master ceiling, Paradigm towers and a big Definitive sub in my family room, some Definitive outdoor speakers on my front porch, B&O ceiling in my master, a pair of legendary JBL’s in the garage, etc., etc.

Damn... do you do installations? :teeth

Yes I did.

For the ceiling mounted speakers I built completely enclosed boxes in the ceiling joists before the dry wall went up. I took photos and made measurements of where the boxes were located so I could cut the holes for the speakers. I also ran the speaker wires in the ceiling and walls, also before the dry wall was installed. And the wires ran to an electrical box behind my stereo, populated with banana jacks so hooking it all up to amplifiers was super easy.

The four satellites and sub in the living room are wired up from the crawl space through small holes in each corner of the living room.

I have a Sony amplifier driving my vintage JBL, L100 Centuries in the garage. The speakers are on a shelf I built for the left speaker, and the right is sitting on a work bench riser on the right. One speaker is upside down so the midrange and treaters are at ear level. Wires are out in the open.

Budman, you are welcome to visit me and I can go into more detail.

Thanks Martin. Maybe a future visit just to hear some flute music again. :teeth

Wiring is out of the question. I am not ripping up drywall at this point. That is why the wireless thing is
attractive. I want good sound. Don't need huge sound.

Just curious, why all the audio nerds hate on Bose?

good question. also not sure the definition of ‘audio nerd’. get the feeling at times that if it’s not rare or not commonly known to lesser folk, it can’t possibly be great. sortofa ‘elite for elite’s sake’. WRT an attempt to create a philharmonic musical experience - maybe. WRT to sound immersion into a film - bose has all of the needed range. and also the built-in tech to seamlessly provide it.

Bose has been a gimmick stereo maker for many, many years. And for what one gets, it’s two to three times as expensive as comparable speakers from other manufacturers.

And though I don’t know about what they do now, in the past they didn’t tell you what their frequency response was.

And in direct comparisons to similar speakers costing much less, Bose has always come in at last place.

Bose is a phenomenon of marketing, not technology.

Thanks man. I will look into it.... I mean I will have my techy daughter look into it. :teeth

Sonos gear is nice and Costco carries some of it.
