Is there actual competitions that include speed?

Almost all of the "practical" shooting sports (IPSC, IPDA, 3 Gun, Cowboy Action, etc.) have time as a key component to the overall score.

That's why they have the BEEEP thing. That's a shot timer. Every time it "hears" a shot, it records the current time (like a lap counter), so you know after, say, 10 shots, how long it took to fire the last one.

Mind, it's not all speed, accuracy matters as well, but speed is certainly a key component to the competition.

It can be really fun, it can also be mentally exhausting. Takes a lot of concentration.
 
Speed shooting has a huge following in the US, but not in Kalifornia ranges (Metcalf-no, Laguna Seca- no, Markley's before they closed- no, Reeds- no. Not many ranges allow it, I suspect due to their insurance stipulations. Near Clear Creek, the BLM land east (Griswold and others) allow it. Look for USPSA competition events.

There are a few gun clubs/shooting organizations that allow it; north Bay, Sac Valley. Likely some in SoCal. Or just wander out to the old Dumbarton Bridge, blast for less than 15 minutes and promptly get out of Dodge.

  • Livermore-Pleasanton Rod & Gun Club (Livermore): Hosts Steel Shoot nights twice a month on Wednesday evenings for rapid fire practice.
  • Linden Gun Range (Linden): A popular outdoor spot that is often cited by the community for hosting action-oriented matches and drills.

I don't know if they allow it at the range in Corona or not, but I know they used to host tournaments.

It was funny, nearby is a paint ball range call Sat Con Village (may well still be there). Friends and I were there for the day, and getting ready one morning. And we were hearing some pretty boomful shots going on. And I'm like "Good heavens, how high do they let folks chronologically here!?"

What I was listening to was the actual gun range nearby.
 
While the majority of my non hunting shooting is various clay pigeon disciplines with shotguns, I can say that outside the Bay Area in Northern CA, timed shooting competition is still alive. The Konocti Rod and Gun Club’s monthly timed Steel Challenge for pistols and pistol carbines is amongst the most attended competitions up in Lake County.

I’ve been practicing, and hoping to participate by the end of the year with both pistol and PCC.

Taking another Barfer, and former Baja participant trap shooting at the Lake County Rod & Gun Club tomorrow. 🤠
 
Try Richmond Gun Club. They have a lot of events for sure. They used to be open to the public, but I don't know about that now.

As is his daughter. What's equally impressive is they both shoot damn near every firearm made very well. They have their favorites (sponsored I'm sure) but each can pick something up cold and blast well right away.

It is a nice range, they have a lot to offer and you can join or go - I believe that it is cheaper and you may be able to do more things if you join one of the 5 clubs that shoot there - the good news is there is no waiting list. Most shooting ranges in the area have waiting list.....
 
Miculek is freaky fast I mean the dude shoots a semi auto as fast as a full auto gun. Lotsa training and natural ability there.

Most shooting events like mentioned above have time components as well as accuracy plus lots of movement to get into new shooting positions, so you can't just pray and spray. USPSA is one and accuracy and time each go into your score as well as what type of ammo you shoot and how modded your gun is I did it for about a year and even though I sucked it was fun as hell to hang out shoot targets and talk with the other people there. There was one extra fun time when we were cleaning up after a shoot and some ones round slow cooked on the floor and went off while we were sweeping everything up. funny after the fact but everyone jumped when it went off and looked around to see who did it.
