SPOILER Warning - 2021 F1 thread

Verstappen given 10 second post race penalty for brake checking Hamilton (2.4g deceleration) and causing a collision.

Makes not a difference in the race outcome, but sets a stake in the ground for future races and clears the fog around whether Verstappen was at fault.

LH always proves what a great driver and sportsman that he is. He always compliments the host country and the fans and thanks his crew.

Commentators posited that Max had to give the position back and was doing so in a place where he'd be able to pass Lewis back easily. Could be that lewis knew this and wasn't going to let Max make that move prompting Max to foot the pedal and force Hammy by. Or, maybe Lewis thought there was something ahead of them in the corner. Remember, it's hard to see around the car in front in those cars.

Above all, this race proved out the earlier comment about the points leader being able to play the bully. We saw this in textbook form with Max bullying Lewis where he needed to.

Edit: forgot to add: you could see almost exactly when Max's tires went off: lap 44. He couldn't keep the thing on the apex, visibly so.

What I didn't understand was Verstappen getting driver of the day.

Not sure how to interpret that.

Then in the end he tried to play the victim.

Hamilton has been too dominant for too long, which drives that vote. In theory...

Always thought street tracks sucked but this one has a nice flow.
Makes for a shit race though with those tunnel like close walls and blind corners with nowhere to go to escape carnage ahead.

Can’t remember last time one race had this much drama. Hamilton showed why he’s pulling in $50M/yr or whatever his paycheque is.

WHAT A FREAKING AMAZING RACE!!!!!!!

I literally watched it 3 times on Sunday!! It was EPIC!!! Verstappen has shown that (as if you didn't already know) he is a complete TOOL!!!

I was hoping that he would DNF due to his gearbox issues.

Hamilton is a class act. I know that he whines about his tires/pit strategy, but he is head and shoulders, in class, above MV.

That track is beautiful, but DAMN it is dangerous. I loved Mick Schumacher's T-Shirt. I ordered a couple from Teepublic.com

What a RACE!!!!!!!!

I agree, in part, there is definitely that factor playing a part, but there are other things going on too.

It just seemed ironic that somebody doing the tactics of Verstappen, which were clearly over the line, would get driver of the day. Perhaps a large part of the audience was either not very sophisticated so didn't realize what he was actually doing or were very partisan, the US market wouldn't have been part of the live viewing audience, for the most part.

I think that given the extent that Verstappen was willing to go in this race, Hamilton needs to be extremely cautious around him in the final race as a DNF for both of them would give the Championship to Verstappen by virtue of 9 wins to 8.

It was telling that the 10 second penalty given to Verstappen, after the fact, meant absolutely nothing. Once again, the golden child did things no other driver would get away with while having zero consequences

It should be a proper circuit. Not a street course.

The race was a shit show.

Can't wait to see how they show this on DTS next year.

What a race is right! See below, but consider that without Stappen taking the gloves off, we'd have another snoozer. Racing's not clean and when it's over regulated, it's not much fun to watch for me. ONE MORE RACE ED!!!!

Yah, but also consider how often we check-in to this thread and say "what a boring race", etc. F1 has been boring for YEARS. The sterile format and adhesion to rules (and a board of racing stewards) has led us to get excited about things like "The Undercut" and "tire degradation". FINALLY we're getting a real racing show...even if there's some bullshittery going on. While I'm a Hammy fan, I've gotta give it to Stappen...he's going for broke and that's deserving of some respect IMO. We can still see him as villain and at least we're getting some good ol' fashioned drama!

Racers adapt or lose, though...and new circuits are excellent at seeing who can adapt and who can't. I loved it!

That seemed like an incredibly intense track to race in a Formula 1 car or any car for that matter. There was no real chance to let their guard down, especially when somebody was behind or in front of them. Most of the racers seemed to relish racing there.

I think they relish racing there when no one else is on the track.

should have built in more run off area IMO.

It's a street track, there was no room for run-off just like the other street tracks.

There was more at stake, this being the penultimate round, so people were pushing much harder than they would a mid season race.

So True. I am soo sad knowing that there is only 1 race left!!! :mad

Holeshot-

You nailed it. As much as I get pissed off at MV (I was shouting at my TV), I agree with you 100%. Without the villain, MV, the races would be super boring.

It was the first race in a long time that I watched every minute of without falling asleep.
When Lewis ran into the back of the RB I thought for sure his championship chances were over.

Differences between the 2009 and 2021 layouts for the Yas Marina Circuit.

They un-Tilke'd the track a bit. Thank goodness.

If Max and Lewis go out and/or fail to score points, Max wins the championship right?

As for the constructors, there is 28 point gap. So even if both Max and Lewis DNF, and Bottas and Perez fail to score points, or even if Perez wins, MB has it won there. I believe this is correct. Which to be fair, is more important for Wolff.
